Detailed Review of Contents...Book Contains Pictures for Every Single Step, Meal Plans, Timelines, etc.

I've never eaten at El Bulli, and I know Chef Adria only via some guest appearances on TV. I can't say enough good things about this cookbook. It will work for novices and experts alike. There are tons of tips, and many of the sauces have freezing instructions as well. Pretty much every step has a full-color photo, so it's hard to make a mistake. There are no strange ingredients either. My only complaint (if I can say that) is nearly every meal contains a fish course--and I'm not a fan of fish. My husband is, however, so thinks it's the best cookbook I own. :)

When I bought it, Amazon did not have any way to preview it. So, I'll try and tell you what's in it.

First, there are the basic recipes. Each one of these has step by step close-up pictures.

Picada, Tomato sauce, Sofrito, Bolognese sauce, Romesco sauce, Pesto sauce, Barbecue sauce, Teriyaki sauce, Chimichurri sauce, Croutons, and Aiolo. Most have two different quantities you can make depending on your needs.

Stocks: One nice tip he gives is that they reboil the stuff they made a stock with, calling it second stock....and then use that as the water the next time they make stock.

Fish stock, chicken stock, beef stock, and ham stock.

Now the meals. There are 31. Each one contains ingredients for 2, 6, 20, and 75 people. Each one contains step by step pictures and a timeline.

Meal 1: Caesar salad, Cheeseburger & potato chips, Santiago cake

Meal 2: Pasta bolognese, mackerel & potato stew, chocolate cookies

Meal 3: Vichyssoise, lamb w/mustard & mint, chocolate truffles

There are not that many vegetarian options--and none of these are bargain meals. Still, Chef Adria gives good tips like on what to do with leftover almond pulp after making almond milk, tomato pulp, etc. Sounds like nothing is ever wasted.

This is a beautiful book. Even if you don't think you'll make an entire meal as written, I'm sure you'll enjoy the detailed instructions and fabulous recipes for many of the different courses.

Can't recommend to buy

I was very excited when I first saw this book, the photos and descriptions really are awesome. The problem is, there are (apparently) many errors when it comes to the recipes and quantities involved. I first noticed something was wrong at the very beginning of the book where he lays out his recipe for beef stock. The recipe calls for 4 ounces of beef, 1 1/2 ounces of beef bones, and 6 POUNDS of celery. Far be it from me to criticize Ferran Adria, but this is clearly wrong.

Lo and behold, I search reviews here and on the internet and it is a known problem that the translation into English is plagued with errors of this sort. Worse, Phaeton Press is fully aware of the errors but won't publish an errata page. If they would just do that I'd be willing to write in the correct quantities directly by hand with a sharpie, but they won't do that, nor have they answered my email queries on the subject.

I gave it 2 stars because many of the recipes are still doable and I LOVE the concept of the book, but since they won't publish corrections that means that I can't trust the quantities for any recipe or the extrapolations for different numbers of people, which really bothers me, so my review is "can't recommend for purchase".

UPDATE - September 2012

FYI - For those who care, I ordered a copy of the British version which has metric measurements, but they are alt least correct and every cooking tool I own had English and metric markings anyway. Come to think of it, isn't it funny that "English" measurements are wrong, yet I had to buy the British version in order to get the correct weights and measures? I put my original US version in the "library" of my apartment building's laundry room for whoever wants it.

Great book for Meal planning, many recipe errors

This book is great for planning a family meal or for a larger party. Just choose a meal plan and follow the time line.
However, there are many errors in ingredient amounts. Some you can guess at and correct, some you can't. For example, the caramelized pears (meal 25), has you use 1 cup of water for 2 people, 2 1/4 cups for 20 but 2 1/2 for 6. After making the recipe, my guess is that for six you want to use 1 1/2 cups water. The chocolate cookies (meal 2) is a little harder to decode. For 20 cookies it calls for 2 tsp, but for 100 it calls for 3/4 cup. The spices only double when the cookie count increases five fold. Beautiful book, but recipes require very careful examination before proceeding.

Essential for Philippians Greek Text Exegesis & Interpretation

Adding to the solid list of contributors to the B&H Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament (EGGNT) series, Joseph H. Hellerman has written the newest volume on Philippians. Hellerman, professor of New Testament language and literature at Talbot School of Theology, received his Th.M. in Hebrew and his Ph.D. in the social history of early Christianity. Upon starring as a professor at Talbot, Hellerman began to focus his studies on Philippians, the fruit of which has grown into this commentary.

In keeping with the aim of the series, Hellerman’s book accomplishes two primary services for the reader. First, the commentary is solely based on the Greek of the New Testament from the fifth edition of the United Bible Societies’ Greek New Testament (xvi). 1 Peter is divided into pericopes by its Greek text, block diagrammed and then exegeted phrase-by-phrase. A good grasp of New Testament Greek is required to benefit from this book as well as an ability to understand the grammatical abbreviations used in the book. Second, as a guide, the series goal is to list and discuss all of the grammatical/exegetical possibilities for the translation of each word, construction of the grammar, and possible meanings. They are doing the work of giving you the options so you can focus more time on other work.

What is particularly striking about Hellerman’s work on Philippians is his focus on the social-historical aspects of the book (though he does attend to the theological issues at hand as well). This social-historical focus comes to light when discussing the occasion of the letter. The occasion for the book gives way to the social-historical focus of the commentary. First, regarding the translation of 1:3, Hellerman believes that “the immediate occasion for Philippians was a gift Paul received from the church through their emissary Epaphroditus.” (4) Thus, contra the traditional translation of 1:3 as stating that Paul was remembering them, Hellerman believes the better translation should be “because of your every remembrance of me,” thus making Philippians a book of Paul thanking them for their gift to him (2 Cor. 11:9; Phil. 4:15).

This opportunity to express gratitude to the Philippians for their gift is used by Paul to speak truth about the church “in a highly Romanized sociopolitical environment.” (4) There was a cursus honorum (“race of honors”) that pervaded the Roman society which Paul took the occasion to resist (4). “The apostle recognized that a stridently Roman honor culture had the potential to seriously undermine the radically different relational ethos that Jesus intended for his community of followers.” (4)

For example, Hellerman notes that while “traditional interpretations of Philippians 2:5-11 focus upon ontological Christology,……Paul’s agenda, however, is primarily sociological, not ontological.” (105) Paul is showing how Jesus used his universal status, which superseded any sociopolitical status on earth, to serve others, rather than lord it over them. “Instead of using social capital to gain more honors and public recognition, Christ leveraged his status in the service of others. Such utilization of power – indeed, a voluntary relinquishing of rank and prestige – would have stuck Roman elites as abject folly.” (107) Jesus is the ultimate example for how to serve those whom the world may see as less than us.

As with all of the books in the EGGNT series, Hellerman’s work on Philippians is a welcome addition that follows in the tradition of Murray Harris’ inaugural volume on Colossians and Philemon. This will serve pastors and teachers well for decades to come.

Highly Recommended!!

Few contemporary scholars today are more qualified and equipped for the exegetical task of leading students through Paul’s letter to the Philippians than Joseph H. Hellerman. Hellerman is Professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Talbot School of Theology. He received a Th.M. from Talbot School of Theology and a Ph.D. from University of California Los Angeles. He has published a number of academic monographs dealing with the social history of early Christianity, including Reconstructing Honor in Roman Philippi (Cambridge University Press, 2005). He has also published several journal articles dealing with various socio-historical and interpretive issues related to Philippians. So, in many ways, the outpouring of the present commentary is a culmination of years of exegetical consideration and study by an expert in the Roman culture of the first century, and the letter of Philippians as a whole.

Following in the footsteps of the previous volumes, Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament: Philippians, looks to eliminate the gap between the Greek text and the available lexical and grammatical tools, synthesizing all the necessary exegetical information into one convenient place. Essentially, aside from bringing his own expertise to the conversation, Hellerman has combed through all the necessary works published in the last few decades—lexical, grammatical, exegetical, etc.—collected the similarities and differences, and brought to the table everything the student would need to make an informed exegetical decision. As a personal exercise I translated the text as I read through the commentary, and there were several times that it felt as if Hellerman was personally walking me through the text providing the various interpretive options and exegetical insights needed to make a well informed decision on the text. This was the first time that I sought to translate and entire book while reading a commentary that dealt with textual and exegetical issues. It was a great exercise and ultimately a testimony to the helpfulness of the present volume for the student, pastor, or teacher.

The commentary begins with a brief introduction to Philippians which includes a concise conversation around typical introductory matters (authorship, date and provenance, occasion, etc.), as well as a ‘Recommended Commentaries’ section that highlights the primary works cited throughout the book. Each section of the commentary deals with a paragraph of text, and begins with a prepositional outline of the Greek text (UBS5). Followed by the prepositional outline, Hellerman guides the reader exegetically through each preposition, commenting on various lexical, grammatical, textual, and socio-historical issues. Ultimately, while discussing the conclusions of various commentators and other popular translations, Hellerman is effectively exhibiting the exegetical landscape of the letter to the student and directing attention where the need arises. I found this to be particularly helpful in the discussion surrounding Philippians 2:5-11. Each section of the book concludes with a “For Further Study” section that has a number of recommended journal articles and monographs on various topics related to the section being discussed. Additionally, each section includes “Homiletical Suggestions” section in which Hellerman has provided the reader with some suggested preaching divisions. Lastly, the back of the commentary includes both a grammar and scripture index, both of which will prove helpful for future reference.

In conclusion, if you are looking to preach or teach through Philippians in the near future, or simply want to obtain a better understanding of the letter in general, I would highly recommend Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament: Philippians. I could not think of a better starting place for the student, pastor, or teacher. The bar for the EGGNT series has just been raised!

Excellent Commentary on Philippians

There are some books in the Bible that are quite frankly a joy to read. Many enjoy reading the Psalms and Proverbs. Others gravitate towards Romans or perhaps the Gospel of John. If we are talking about a book that is a joy to read, one cannot forget Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians as after all one of the main themes of this book has been stated to be that of joy. What is also a joy to read is a helpful commentary that provides salient exegetical insight into the text. If you are looking for such a tool when it comes to Philippians, I recommend Joseph Sellerman’s Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament: Philippians, edited by Andreas Kostenberger and Robert Yarbrough.

I will state that as noted in the title of the book, Sellerman’s efforts are largely spent exegeting the Greek text. This means there is a great deal of interaction with Greek. If you are not used to that or have not spent much time looking at the original biblical languages, do not let that unfamiliarity scare you off from using this book. Sellerman does a great job of explaining what terms mean in a way that is useful for both the seasoned exegete and Greek experts as well as for any laymen willing to devote time to studying the text.

This commentary begins with helpful background information on issues of authorship, literary integrity, date and location of writing, why Paul wrote this letter, some linguistic and rhetorical points of emphasis, as well as a useful outline of the book of Philippians. From there, Sellerman then begins engaging the text.

I fully appreciated the manner in which Sellerman not only explains word meanings in the context of Philippians, but also how he couches those definitions with salient cultural engagement. In order to grasp what Paul is saying in Philippians, one has to understand the audience, their issues, the culture in which they lived, and various other important points. Sellerman aptly engages all these relevant subjects and intersperses throughout his exegesis how those issues come to play in our understanding of what Paul is saying in this epistle.

A staple of this commentary series is the excellent bibliography located at the conclusion of each section. Most bibliographies are noted in the back of the book and are not divided into subject areas or the portion of the text where that particular resources much be proven useful. This commentary series takes a different approach, dividing the resource suggestions at the end of each periscope as to what portion of that text they address. I found this to be quite useful.

This is a commentary and a commentary series as a whole for that matter I highly recommend for seminary and bible college students, pastors, and anyone willing to dig into the meat of the Greek text. I am convinced you will find this to be a valuable resource for years to come and by using this in your studies of Philippians, you will have a much firmer grasp on what exactly Paul was saying to the believers in Philippi so long ago and why it matters for us today.

new pathways in etymological study

Scholarly, substantive, and engaging as it is, Liberman's dictionary in his own words is "written to test the chosen approach to the new dictionary" he has put together. The dictionary is intended to be a model for future etymological exploration and study. Most importantly for the field, it introduces but mostly exemplifies a new approach to the investigation of word origins and deciding on the right root for a word, when this can be done with a reasonable degree of assurance. As Liberman states and demonstrates with his analyses of 55 words, the large majority common, "tracing word origins is a game of probabilities" in which the "centrifugal principle" should be favored when it comes to assigning a word's cognate. This principle is explained, "All conditions being equal, tracing a word to a native root should be preferred to declaring it a borrowing. In similar fashion, it is more attractive to refer to an ascertainable foreign source than to an unidentifiable substrate."

Liberman is a professor of Germanic philology at the U. of Minnesota and author of many books and articles on etymology and language. Most of the 55 words he has chosen for this first book of a planned series are simple words. Among these are bird, drab, ever, dwarf, gawk, key, lass, man, pimp, toad, and witch. Nearly every word is traced to a root word among the northern European family of languages, the basis for Anglo-Saxon and modern English. The word "jeep" is an obvious exception. A few of the words are controversial four-letter or gender terms.

While the author's "centrifugal principle" sets relevant limitations and preferences for deciding on the root of a particular word, the etymological practice demonstrated in his analysis of the more than 50 words is complex and depends on much scholarly knowledge. In these analyses, Liberman does not simply follow a line of apparent related words to a root word, as seen in most dictionaries, including even the esteemed multi-volume Oxford English Dictionary. For Liberman's search for the most probable root entails assessing other respected etymologists' research and conclusions, comparing similar words or possible cognates from several languages, and arguing for why the particular root identified is preferable. In other words, Liberman goes well beyond simply denoting a word root. He aims not only to clarify etymology where able, but to unearth its complexity where called for both to correct errors and assumptions regarding particular words and improve etymological methodology and research.

Word lovers will find the lengthy, involved articles on the number of particular familiar and few obscure words engaging. Most significantly for the field of etymology is his methodology; which is both rigorous and flexible in reaching probable attributions for word roots. With scientific method (as opposed to the frequent presumptions and conventions), literary (i. e., writing) and reasoning ability, and incomparable scholarship, Liberman charts new paths in the field of etymology.

Psychological Testing, Anastasi and Urbina

This text is relatively complete and is an excellent reference for graduate level courses but is frustratingly difficult for undergraduates. For undergraduates, the text is obscure, difficult to understand, and lacks sufficient examples, underlining, italics, case boxes, and other reader's aids. Many of my brightest and best undergraduate students found it very difficult to summarize and retain information abstracted from the text. Most have been highly critical not only of the text but of the very poor selection of test items in the instructor's test bank. Many distractors are nonfunctional, the wording is vague, and the correct alternative is sometimes obscure even on open book/open note tests. It is paradoxical that a text in test theory and construction has produced a test bank with poorly constructed multiple choice items, as my classes have consistently demonstrated through item analysis using the principles outlined in the text! Second, in some areas the text is insufficiently complete for graduate students. Frequently, the authors mention new technologies or approaches but with sufficient lack of detail to be frustrating. Finally, the text suffers from antiquated language (e.g., sentences that begin with: "It will be remembered that ...") and excessive use of the passive voice, making the text unnecessarily difficult to understand.

Not ready for undergraduate Students

In general, if technical information about Psychological Testing is what you are looking for and you have completed a masters program, this text may be perfect for you. Even thought my exposure to this text was for a undergraduate college class. I found it very hard to follow and understand even after the 3rd reading. I found that the material in the text was very in-depth, but lacking chapter conclusions or summaries.

Inappropriate for undergrads but ideal for grad students. Anastasi's classic text (now updated), has transformed generations of "intuitive" clinicians-in-training into serious behavioral scientists. Note that this is _not_ a great sourcebook for how to administer or evaluate _specific_ tests... Rather, it is an outstanding discussion of the science of assessment, e.g., in _general_, what would it mean for a questionnaire to be "valid"? Or, in _general_, what would it mean for a test to be "biased"?

I've had this book for a year now, and I have to say I didn't really like it too much when I first got it. I felt like the material was over my head, and I didn't really see much value in the examples that were used in the text.

Fast forward one year.... I have more experience with Excel now, and I have seen and experienced more "non-standard" Excel situations, i.e. stuff other than the simple summations any Excel beginner can do. Upon revisiting this book, I'm developing an appreciation for the elegance and effectiveness of some of the techniques in this book!

I would give five stars to this, but I don't care too much for way the chapters are organized...I would have left out the "summary" section, for example, unless it REALLY added something to the chapter -- most of which, IMO, do not. I would like to see exercises and associated sample Excel files added so that a person can practice what's being taught here. Almost all of these problems would lend themselves well to a tutorial-type of book that I believe would be more accessible to people, like I was a year ago, that don't yet have the depth and breadth of Excel experience I believe it takes to really "get" what's in this book. This book is not for Excel beginners, and never will be, but with the addition of exercises and more verbose explanations of the concepts, it could become more accessible and useful to a broader spectrum of Excel users.

Amazing Stuff in One Place

What makes this book so good is that there is something for every Excel user. This book filled in some missing pieces for me that I've been wondering about for years (yes, it's true I think about Excel too often!) Whether it's statistical modeling or accounting there's something new you can pickup from Jelen. The commands list alone is worth to price of the book. Things I never knew Excel could do (convert currency to Euros for example) is explained in plain language. He even warns of functions that will cause Excel to crash! The best Excel book I own (and I have quite a few.

Bill does a great job in providing a book filled with incredible excel formulas. I enjoy building automated spreadsheets that use complicated formulas. This book has provided me with several I now use. Great job!

Ernesto Estrada, Professor and Chair in Complexity Science, University of Strathclyde, UK,Philip Knight, Lecturer in Mathematics, University of Strathclyde, UK

Ernesto Estrada is a Professor in Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde, UK. He is the Chair in Complexity Science since 2008 and the 1964 Chair in Mathematics since 2014. He holds the Wolfson Research Merit Award from the Royal Society and has published more than 160 papers and 10 book chapters. He is the author of The Structure of Complex Networks: Theory and Applications, published by Oxford University Press (OUP) in 2011. Professor Estrada is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Complex Networks published by OUP. His research interests are in the mathematical analysis of networks, the use of physical analogies to study networks and applications of network theory to society, chemistry, biology, ecology and engineering.

Philip Knight is a Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde, UK. He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Manchester in 1993 and has spent most of his career carrying out research into matrix algebra. His interest in applications drew him inexorably towards network theory and his research interests now centre on the algebraic structure of networks as well as on the use of networks to represent other mathematical structures. More recently, Dr Knight has been involved in teaching courses on network theory in different countries and is well regarded among students for his expository abilities.

The Best SharePoint User Guide on the Market

I know this book was a bit late to get on the scene, June 5th. Let me tell you, this book was well worth the wait! I've had the chance to read other beginning SharePoint books and user guides, specifically SharePoint 2007 User's Guide: Learning Microsoft's Collaboration and Productivity Platform and Microsoft SharePoint 2007 For Dummies, and none of them lay it out for the end users as well as this book does.

The book is filled with easy to follow examples with step-by-step instructions that make it easy to implement your own team solutions.

My favorite chapters are 6, 10, 11, and 12; Content Types, Forms Services, Excel Services, and the BDC, respectively. None of these chapters are longer than 50 pages, but they are filled to the brim with so much useful information that you will read them from beginning to end.

This book is the definitive SharePoint user's guide.

This is the best book on the market for learning how the newest versions of SharePoint can help company's improve business processes and information management.

From getting a solid understanding of content types and site columns (new features within SharePoint) to making use of Forms Services, the reader gains knowledge of how to use these important concepts to create business solutions that are easy to maintain and extend.

Because SharePoint is so open and powerful, easily explaining how to incorporate SharePoint to help a company run its business more efficiently is challenging. To take full advantage of SharePoint, companies will need employees that are not developers (programmers) to embrace the technology. These users will need to know how to utilize SharePoint to meet business objectives, and how to customize the platform (without the need for code). The book is simple to read and rich of guided samples, it covers all the aspects you need in order to start working with Sharepoint and MOSS.
If you're a developer that wants to customize the engine, this is not the right book for you... but if you've the needs to learn Sharepoint and to work immediately with it, this is extremely recommended.

This book does an excellent job introducing developers to the world of ABAP

Learning how to develop applications using ABAP technology can be quite a challenge. Unlike other mainstream languages out there (e.g. Java, Python, etc.), learning ABAP is not as simple as downloading an SDK, pick up a book, and start coding through examples in a weekend. Indeed, before you ever start coding in ABAP, you must have at least a basic understanding of the AS ABAP platform, the proprietary development tools SAP uses, and so forth.

Though there are many books out there written about ABAP, I’ve yet to encounter a starting guide as cohesive as Getting Started with ABAP. This book does an excellent job introducing developers to the world of ABAP, blending basic ABAP language concepts with practical use cases, best practices, and perhaps most importantly, context. By context, I’m referring to those elements of ABAP which have changed over the years but still show up in legacy code (and sadly new code written using out-of-date practices). For new developers, it’s vital to have this background to be able to learn ABAP the right way and not pick up bad habits.

Like many consulting firms out there looking to grow their team, I’m always on the lookout for materials to help our developers quickly come up to speed in ABAP. This is especially true now as more and more developers flood into the SAP development landscape to support newer technologies such as SAPUI5/Fiori, HCP, and HANA. In our case, we’re usually dealing with seasoned developers who are just new to ABAP. For us, this guide is a perfect launching point for getting new developers plugged in. It’s concise, informative, accessible, and reads well (not like some of those regurgitated manuals you see out there). So, if you’re looking to get started in ABAP, I strongly recommend you give this book a try.

Best way to start with ABAP

I started in the ABAP world around 16 years ago...and my first thought after seeing an R/3 screen was "I want to work for that company"...of course...my second thought was "This ABAP looks so weird"...anyway...after 11 years I managed to work for ABAP and funnily enough...for the almost 5 years that I have working with them...I have barely touched ABAP...

ABAP is a language that I truly love and admire...it's just awesome...

When I got my myself the chance of reading this book I was completely trilled...just an opportunity to go back to my roots and learn ABAP for the second time...

This book is just awesome...I wish it was available by the time I was learning ABAP...it explains everything in a very simple and concise way...focusing on the important stuff and as a bonus...you get to build a really nice project that involves most of the things that would use if working for a client...

Obviously...being an ABAP veteran myself...I knew most the stuff...but I gladly discovered some new features that are really cool...and now I'm glad that I know them and could use if I have the change to write new ABAP applications...

If you have never heard of ABAP but are curious...or if you're just starting on this fascinating book...you should really...and I mean really...read this book...
