Highly recommended

"Lovely" is clearly not the correct attribute for a book on the diagnosis of mental illness. But this book does come in very handy, both for the seasoned clinician who might need quick reminders, and for younger colleagues, as well as the generally interested reader, who wants to get a comprehensive view into the otherwise complex labyrinth of mental diagnoses.
Similarly to the loosening of distinct categories evident in DSM-5, the author goes further in deconstructing the otherwise too firm diagnostic categorizations.
And the Jungian chapter at the end is a bonus!
The book is highly recommended, and, in fact, makes for enjoyable reading.

Simple Guide for those of us shuffled in the changes & lost studying for state licensing

Easy explanation of a book that is supposed to be simple in the first place. I skipped to page 15 and learned 3 things immediately. I'm studying for the NCMHCE and have been out of grad school, working in the field for a while when the switch came, not only the DSM5 but the actual exam ( I live in Florida) so double whammy. I read the entire book in a few hours and will re-read it again to highlight what I missed. I recommend this for anyone caught between the DSM IV TR and 5 in addition to learning new material,working in the field, and learning how to take a different kind of exam. This little gem of a book along with all my other study materials has already helped lessen my stress and explained in a very practical,yet clinical way how to navigate to changes and make the 5 less menacing and more friendly, like not the dark side..."I can use the force" and actually understand the concept of spectrum. Change is constant,yet it is helpful to know what those changes are and how they affect/effect our world situation. Just my thoughts, everyone has an opinion yet this book has certainly enriched my experience with the DSM 5.

Strumpf has been fielding calls on the National Grammar Hot Line for more than 25 years, telling callers how to make their subjects agree with their verbs and tell the difference between "who" and "whom." Thus many of the examples in this thick but highly readable grammar handbook come from questions—sometimes rather charming ones—posed by callers. With the help of editor and writer Douglas, Strumpf guides the grammar-challenged reader through the parts of speech, then demonstrates how to dissect sentences, from the simplest to the most complex. His clear-cut guidelines offer some flexibility: he grants permission to end sentences with prepositions and to use the passive voice. On other points, however, like the ban on split infinitives, the rules remain intractable. Fellow grammarians will find much to argue with, from Strumpf's insistence on the interchangeability of "that" and "which" to the use of abbreviations in print. It's easy to sympathize with the idea that network broadcasters should be required to observe the rules of good grammar, but some of his pet peeves, such as overused adjectives and vulgar interjections, seem just, well, peevish. Though it will almost certainly be overshadowed by the buzz-carrying Eats, Shoots & Leaves, Strumpf's handbook does convey the basics of grammar well enough to be of great use to any casual writer.

Excellent and enjoyable resource!

Excellent grammar book! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants more detailed information and the bigger picture about American English. I especially like the way this book and its chapters are organized. Also, the writers never assume that a question is stupid, and the tone that is used throughout the entire book creates only a positive experience for readers. Also, clearly written and easy to understand, this book has a lot of topics that I haven't seen in others. I especially learned a lot more about using the correct case with abbreviated clauses. I also gleaned some more insight about various vocabulary rules (i.e, such as the confused suffixes -able and -ible) and word pairs that I never knew had different definitions (i.e. attorney versus lawyer), and some interesting cases of "eponyms." Even more, the writers are informative and unpretentious. They also provide unusual facts about some words, as well as some historical information about the English language, which I found enjoyable. I could go on and on with only praise for this book. I jotted down a lot of notes while reading it because of its simple, yet detailed and engaging style. The detailed explanations the authors employ were far more understandable and engaging for me than many other grammar books that I've read recently. I read every page. Whether you already know a lot about grammar or are new to some of the technicalities and confusing exceptions to the grammar rules that go hand-in-hand with the English language, I hope you enjoy it as much as I.

The best grammar book you will ever own - for both native and non-native speakers

As a writer and an ESL teacher, I am always looking for great books on English grammar.

With this book, I have found that. And more.

This book is the most thorough book on English grammar I have ever found. It also includes the most accurate English usage. One might expect all grammar books to include only the 'most accurate English usage', but this is not true. I have other grammar books that include only 'common parlance' and not the 'strictly correct' usage.

Students need to know both - what is correct and what people actually use.

For writers, teachers and interested persons whose native language is English, this book is invaluable - meaning, that its personal value for me is so high I cannot put a price on it. The value of this book extends way beyond its book price. It is a book you will want to keep for years.

In fact, this is the first grammar book I have purchased since college, (a 'few' years ago).

For ESL students (such as those I personally teach), this book is helpful because it is the most thorough reference they will ever need.

I mention ESL students but I want to add a caveat.

A beginner ESL student may find this book too thorough for their current needs. However, a student who is returning to ESL studies OR a student who is a very quick learner OR who has academic English in mind, will find this book a MUST HAVE.

Language is the key to everything

I read something years ago to the effect that "When a nation begins its decline, language is the first thing to go.". I always use grammar as a litmus test for determining the slower-thinking people. Those who pick up buzzwords and use too much doublespeak are the slower-witted. Then I know how to deal with that person.
This book is very helpful in avoiding errors as best I can. Also, language appreciation is required to enjoy good jokes and once again, the lack of understanding of the fine points of jokes also indicates the slower wit.

Excellent resource for beginners!

For years I had searched for an adult upholstery (non-credit) class to take at a local community college, but no luck. Other books did not provide enough detail to help me tackle projects on my own either. I did finally attend a 5-week class and the instructor recommended this book. It has so many photos, definitions and explanations that cover much of what a beginner would need. The classroom/textbook style is easy to read and really helps when you need to speak to suppliers or order tools etc. I purchased it after paging through the copy at class and knew how detailed it was. I wish that the website could have shown more examples of the pages so that others would know what they are buying. Great resource!

About the Author
Dr Jean-Claude Guimberteau is co-founder and scientific director of the Institut Aquitain de la Main, and past-President 2011-2012 of the French Society for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SOFCPRE). Dr Guimberteau trained in hand and plastic surgery at the University of Bordeaux, under Professors Goumain and Baudet. He worked in microsurgery and transplantation, extending his surgical experience through working in the USA with Dr J M Converse and Dr Ralph Millard. With Professor Claude Verdan in Switzerland and Dr Harold Kleinert in the USA he wrote a book: New ideas in hand surgery He has developed our knowledge of the structure and function of tendon physiology, and pioneered techniques for secondary flexor tendon repair. Perhaps his most significant contribution to our understanding of human biology has come about through his innovative use of video-endoscopy to investigate the structure of the fascia in vivo, resulting in what is essentially a new concept of living tissue and a new ontology for human body architecture. In 2011 I came across Shaun Snapp's blog (scmfocus.com), and immediately took a liking. In particular, I was drawn to his independent and critical tone, and a willingness to challenge the "objectivity" of many commentators and advisors in the forecasting industry. He also takes a reasoned look at the common dogmas of our profession, with an eye to encouraging what can work, while exposing the marketing fluff and shoddy thinking of the really bad ideas. He is not just another cheerleader hyping the latest forecasting buzzword or fad.

Shaun's book "Supply Chain Forecasting Software" is easy to get through, with points illustrated by screen shots from real forecasting software. The book is not a product-by-product review of the offerings of software vendors (which is what I was originally expecting). Instead, he covers several fundamental topics of a supply chain forecasting process (like statistical forecasting, consensus, collaboration, error management, and lifecycle planning). He also provides numerous links to blog posts where he goes into further detail on these and related topics.

The chapter on attributes-based forecasting argues for the importance of flexible, user-defined hierarchies (as opposed to the static hierarchies that are defined and locked-in during implementation of many software packages.) An attribute is anything that is associated with a product, such as physical characteristic like color or size, or any other categorization (e.g. location, season, target audience). With flexible hierarchies, user can organize data, model, and generate forecasts in a way that is most suitable for the particular situation.

There is also a chapter devoted to forecastable versus unforecastable products, which is an important consideration for anyone trying to manage a supply chain. Rather than expecting to achieve a high level of accuracy for all products, or wasting resources pursuing unachievable levels of accuracy, Shaun shares ideas for identifying and dealing with the unforecastable.

"Supply Chain Forecasting Software" would be a valuable read for organizations considering the selection of new forecasting software. It would also be useful to those organizations that have implemented forecasting systems and process, yet are failing to see the expected/promised results. This book can help any forecaster understand why their efforts may be failing, and what they can do about it.

Valuable Wisdom from a Seasoned Consultant

Mr. Snapp has a keen understanding of the functional and technical approaches to demand forecasting that work (and do not work) in organizations. He is a first rate consultant in all ways and clearly puts the interests of his clients (and readers) ahead of any commercial objectives. This is quite rare and I found it very refreshing.

The book is about 250 pages long, but it is written in a conversational style and can be read in its entirety in one or two sittings. If you're considering purchasing or implementing a tool for demand planning, this would be a fast and very worthwhile read. And, if you have an older system, "Supply Chain Forecasting Software" will certainly broaden your horizons.

The book provides detailed information about a handful of bundled and standalone solutions. If developed further in future editions, I would recommend seeking information on other systems as well.

Invaluable Guide

Written from an actual hands-on well-experienced SAP software engineer, this guide is an invaluable tool for anyone involved within the realm of SAP and also just to aid in a better understanding of the ins and outs of the Manufacturing Supply Chain concept, business model and modules.

Snapp utilizes real experiences from actual forecasting implementations to include clear, precise diagrams and charts to further illustrate his points.

This is a great guide within the SCM Focus series. I have gotten 3 other books within the series and with the risk of being redundant, I feel they are all invaluable.

Excellent NURSING book for dialysis/ renal nurses

There seem to be few books on the care of renal patients written from a nursing perspective. This is one such book and an excellent one at that. The coverage is at a level appropriate for practicing nurses in the field. It's well written, balanced and fairly specific about practice issues. It is British but this is not detrimental to its value for US RNs. Buy it if you can find it at a reasonable price.

About the Author
Pamela Wible, M.D., founded the Ideal Medical Care Movement and was named one of the 2015 Women Leaders in Medicine by the American Medical Student Association for her pioneering contributions to medical student and physician suicide prevention. Dr. Wible lives in Eugene, Oregon, where she loves caring for patients as a solo family physician in a clinic designed entirely by her community.

A "must-read" for every medical student, intern, and resident.

As a physician, and as the mother of a gifted physician who died by suicide at the age of 29, I applaud Dr. Wible for going where no other physician has had the courage to go before. We measure everything in medicine except the lives of physicians that are lost to suicide. Had my son read this book he might still be alive. The “game face” that physicians are forced to wear drives many of our most gifted and sensitive doctors to a place of isolation and despair. Let’s make this book a “must read” for every medical student and resident. The very first thing that all doctors must learn is that there is no shame in being human. Human vulnerability should not be thought of as a “career killer” but instead a prerequisite for looking after the physical and mental well-being of our patients.

Out of the darkness, not quite into the light

Kudos to Dr. Wible for shining a light where there has been none. That nearly earns 5 stars in and of itself. Having read only bits of the book before tonight I was expecting the book, in its entirety, to be less than what it is. I began with Part II. Solutions - read it from start to finish, almost without pause & proceeded to read & finish Part I. This book in total is greater than the sum of its parts. Physicians in many different circumstances and stages of their careers are represented. Many in medicine suffering the negative effects of a profession ruled from the top by varying degrees of sadistic Medical Boards will find a physician in the book who is like her/himself.

The letters, save 1 or 2, are letters about suicide; they are not actually "Suicide Letters". On their own they are powerful & would be more so without the answers Dr. Wible provided. The author's understanding of what the writers are going through seems shallow, the easy-breezy equivalent of a Get Well Soon card. Dr. Wible suggested to one: "Get a massage, get a puppy..."? That advice made me cringe; for anyone who has suffered or is suffering from depression, a puppy is another burden and finding a good massage therapist could prove to be an overwhelming demand. Dr. Wible's gift is her energetic determination to expose a formerly taboo subject to the light of day and to provide a hub for doctors and med students to find each other and talk openly. Her Achilles heel is revealed in responses that have a simplistic, condescending tone. The responses feel disingenuous.

Numerous references to the author's own blogs, to retreats she holds, to her Tedx Talks & ultimately insinuating herself, by way of a letter & photo op, into a bill in the MO legislative process - all appeared to be self-serving. I found myself wondering whether the book wasn't rushed to coincide with passage of the MO legislation that will provide funding for research into the subject of Physician Suicide.

If the goal is to prevent suicide among physicians, Dr. Wible needs to enlist the help of psychiatrists, other mental health professionals and fellow doctors who are not psychiatrists. Several of the book's letter writers expressed, in their letters, a desire to help in any way possible; requests of that nature were categorically ignored. The most disappointing and troubling aspect of the book is the dangerous mismatch between the (sometimes subtle) seriousness of the letters and Dr. Wible's replies. Did she follow up with the writers? Some were in need of real-life help and close follow-up. Having read the book, I find it unclear whether the author's priority is prevention of another physician's suicide or having her name associated with the subject.

Difficult to rate this book. If you are considering buying it, see if you can purchase a used copy or read the sample & browse the author's forum.... you'll get the same info or more. I gave the book 4 stars because the words "Physician Suicide" are in the title. It's a serious problem that needs to be discussed in public.

Physician, heal thyself!

Full disclosure -- I am a second-year resident in a family medicine residency in the Northeast, and I had the amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve as an editor for Dr. Wible's original manuscript. I was unpaid, but when she asked if I'd be willing to help, I jumped at the chance.

This topic is so vitally important and so under-addressed. The public has a very limited concept of what goes into medical education and post-graduate training, as well as the demands that continue to be placed on the shoulders of our physicians. I am blessed to be in one of the best programs in the country, where my needs -- professional, educational, and personal -- are always taken into consideration and my feedback is received with sincerity. I could not be more fortunate nor grateful. I am the exception, however. There are thousands of US medical graduates every year who do not match into a residency program and are left with a quarter-million piece of paper and nothing they can do with it. Too many of these beautiful souls lose hope and decide that suicide is a better alternative than living with crippling debt and the disappointment of feeling that they have failed their families, themselves, their dreams, aspirations, and goals. Other physicians who have been practicing for years in an abusive, demanding, thankless system become worn out and feel that they just can't keep treading water anymore. They, too, feel that they have failed themselves, their families, and their patients.

How does this happen? How are these complaints even legal? Are doctors being too sensitive and whiny? Don't physicians make, like, a gazillion dollars a year? What could they *possibly* have to complain about? Dr. Wible candidly addresses the abuses all too often found in America's medical schools and residency training programs. Most of us start out on par (or even superior to) our non-medical peers with regard to our mental health, but by graduation day, the majority of us have either suffered situational depressive episodes, if not fulminant, severe depression requiring medication and/or psychotherapy. Many choose to ignore their symptoms, chalking it up to being "the way it's always been done." Many endure it in silence, fearing that they will jeopardize their future ability to be licensed if they seek help. I didn't even realize some of the situations I endured as a naive, wide-eyed medical student and eager intern constituted abuse until after the fact. But when I took time away from my medical career to focus on my family and heal emotionally, I realized that I had truly been in denial, and for quite some time felt utterly alone in my suffering.

This book points out that, as physicians who realize we have been grossly mistreated by the systems entrusted to educate,train, and employ us, we are not alone. To those who are our patients, you deserve better -- if we are not whole and healthy, how can we help you to be? If we do not care for ourselves, how can we reliably consult with you on how to better care for yourself? Dr. Wible is the voice of so many physicians who were never able to speak out, or who would like to speak out, but fear repercussions. She is inspiring a new generation of doctors to stand up and say "no more" -- this is NOT what I signed up for, I deserve better, and my patients deserve better! She is already influencing state legislation that will protect physician anonymity so that they will be able to voluntarily seek help without worrying about being followed by state medical boards. She is reaching out and speaking to students and residents, restoring our self-worth, and encouraging us to remember why we got into medicine in the first place (and, for the vast majority of us, I can assure you dear readers, it was never for the promise of a gazillion dollars a year!).

I cannot overstate the importance of this book. It will shock and sadden, but it will also uplift and inspire. I hope that you will read with an open mind and heart. I hope that, the next time you see your doctor and answer when they ask how you've been, that you will respond in kind and ask how they are doing as well. I hope that the physicians who read this will take the time to consider their own mental and emotional states, and ponder on how they can help themselves and their colleagues, and in doing so, better serve their patients. I hope the voices of the lost and struggling will resonate in your ears and inspire you to be kinder, more tolerant, and more understanding to all those around you. We never know what people are going through. We never know what battles they are fighting in the depths of their minds. If we are to change medical care in this country for the better, we must start with ourselves. Dr. Wible has lit the match -- may it become a conflagration of positive change and better care for all!

1)The book is mainly clinical oriented.
2)A Lot of chapters were written by new AA.
3)The biblio. is Very uptodt. (some voices '014).
4)Issues concerning Basics and molecular mech. are ok.
5)An important thing, Good Quality/price ratio.
