Ron White has been writing How Computers Work for 20 years, during which time he’s also been executive editor at PC Computing magazine, BYTE.com, and groovyPost.com. He’s been a computer columnist for Windows Sources and 80 Micro. How Computers Work was named best nonfiction computer book, and his writing has been honored by the Maggie Awards, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards, and The National Endowment for the Humanities. He and his wife, Sue, have bounced back and forth between Boston and San Francisco before finally ending up in San Antonio.

Good start, but some fundamental errors in Part 1 that could confuse novices. Wait for a later printing.

I bought my grandson, a college freshman majoring in informatics, this book as a gift: How Computers Work (10th Ed.) by Ron White, First Printing, Dec. 2014. I pre-ordered it from Amazon back in November, 2014, and it did arrive in time for the holidays.

While I applaud the effort and book overall, having owned several editions in the past, there are fundamental errors early in this first printing that could erode reader confidence, since the mistakes are so basic. I imagine this edition was rushed to press prior to the holiday season, and frankly, it shows.

Now I must explain to my grandson the mistakes, and apologize.

Here's just a sample of what I've found so far in Part 1:

1. A table is not a computer, but a tablet such as an iPad is: Page 5, last paragraph: "--mainframe, desktop, table, digital music player, ... " ???

2. P. 13, image 3, 4th sentence is not a sentence and doesn't help the explanation: "Resistance is how the material which the electricity is flowing." ???

3. P. 15, image 5. The image of the rheostat is confusing and makes the opposite point it should. The way it is drawn, it contradicts the text. In fact, as the knob is turned clockwise, the amount of resistance should increase, not decrease as depicted in the image. When the knob in the diagram, as drawn, is turned clockwise, there is MORE resistive wire to travel through. The current out would therefore decrease. And that's just backwards to how knobs on radios and stereos normally work. Turning clockwise will increase the current out, not decrease it. Duh? 4. P. 17, image of Mona Lisa is wrong, contradicts text to the left in section 6: The Mona Lisa appears in COLOR. This is NOT a half-tone image, consisting of only black and white dots. The whole example could be improved by showing a contrast between a half-tone (1-bit color) and, say, a 256-bit color image of Mona Lisa. E.g., see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halftone .

5. P. 36, first paragraph. Pages XXX-xxx are referred to. Where are these pages?

6. I bought the digital edition also, wondering if the same mistakes are there. Yes, they are. Furthermore, the navigation when scrolling was not working correctly in the latest version of Firefox (34.05) for the Mac (OS X 10.10.1). When I use the left navigation menu, click on Chapter 1, How Waves take the Universe on a Joy Ride, then start scrolling down, the page jumps to the beginning of the book! I can't even read it, unless I start scrolling from the beginning of the book. Come on now, this is totally unacceptable.

So I tried Chrome (Version 39.0.2171.95 (64-bit)). While the navigation works, the first Interaction just came up with an empty black box with a yellow border. It just does NOT work at all (but surprisingly it does in Firefox, and I can add ducks to the waves, if I FIRST scroll from the beginning of the book to get there).

7. The interactive animation on Writing Data to RAM (and reading it) is confusing. When getting to Reading data from RAM (in the same interaction), the illustration is simply confusing. How can a capacitor send a current through a transistor that is CLOSED. The circuit is broken between the capacitor and the data line. How can current travel from the capacitor to the data line, if the switch is off? This is not logical. It must be wrong, or I'm missing something here.

Overall, this is NOT a good start to the book, and makes me a doubter of the accuracy of some of the content in this first printing/web edition. I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book to others at this time with errors I've discovered in the first few dozen pages.

I am not a computer novice, having started with programming in FORTRAN on mainframe computers with punched cards. I taught college students how to use computers over 4 decades. More recently, I've written interactive Web simulations, tutorials and tests that are widely used.

My advice: Wait for a later printing when some of these rather basic and embarrassing errors are fixed in the 10th edition.

I am finding errors early in the book

Beautiful illustrations, but I am finding errors. This one is forgivable, in the Introduction to the 10th Edition, page xviii: "...a computer that would return a solution in the form of punch cards". I remember punch cards for input, but not output. On page 17, I am asked to view an image of a two-bit Mona Lisa. But I see a color Mona Lisa. I think the image must be at least 8 bit. Also on page 17, the explanation for multi-bit sampling is not consistent with the Diagrams A and B that are referenced. The same diagrams are referenced a bit more intelligently in the discussion of sampling rate. Are the appropriate diagrams missing? Onward to Chapter 2, but I am disillusioned. Comments are welcome about suspected errors.

Excellent Computer Technology Explanations

I have personally been involved with computers and computer technology since 1960, from huge IBM mainframes and the initial Apple and IBM compatible PCs, to the current host of devices that allow almost everyone instant worldwide communication and access to virtually unlimited information. The evolution of this technology has been mind boggling. My former knowledge and expertise on the leading edge of this field is now lost to newer generations of science, children, and grandchildren. This book explains in simple terms with excellent illustrations the basics of computer technology.

The New Jersey Computer Club, of which I am President, no longer builds, repairs, or programs computers, but tries to assist seniors in learning about, purchasing, and using computer related products. Many only want an inexpensive way to communicate by email or text with others, or to share pictures, or get information, or hear music or watch videos, and/or live in a world with online shopping and banking. But many others want to know why and how everything works. This book answers those basic questions, and introduces the concepts and terminology for further investigation.

It's not a text that you must read cover to cover, getting lost in details along the way. It is a series of short well explained articles that you can peruse in any order that interests you. Today you may want to know about computer components; tomorrow the Internet; or maybe digital cameras or smart-phones. This is a great place to start. It is leisurely reading for everyone, and not a manual on a specific topic. The book title might be better, as “How Computer Technology Works” to differentiate it from prior editions that focused more on just computers.

This book has an excellent selection of diverse topics that are both meaningful and current, especially in this rapidly changing field. Technical data that is soon obsolete is minimal, in favor of technical concepts that are more lasting. Periodic supplemental articles on new technology, or significant changes in existing technology, would be a welcome addition on the Que website for registered owners of this book, as well as a current technology time-line and references listing.

No technical book of this size and complexity is perfect, and there are typos and errata that need correction, but I haven't found any other book that explains so much so well. Another winner for Que and Ron White. Thank you.

Political Fable and Children's Story

Dino Buzzati's THE BEARS' FAMOUS INVASION OF SICILY has the appearance of a children's book with a much more subversive political message at heart. The book starts with the author's charming illustrations and brief character descriptions- of the Bear Marzipan, the Bear Dandelion, the Bear Merlin, Marmoset the Cat and others. This introduction of the major players and their driving character traits has a theatrical almost overture-like effect of setting the stage for the action that follows.

The plot reads as a magical-realist, forgotten history lesson of Sicily and the long wars and strife between bears and humans. The overriding themes of the book involve the corruption of humans and the real moral risk faced by the bears when they begin to adopt the airs and aspirations of their human counterparts. Few children's books deal with war or politics and none so inventively. It works beautifully for the child reader and adult reader alike. A mature young reader (for example a child who easily picked up on the allegory of the Narnia Chronicles) will discern much about human/bear nature and an adult with some exposure to history will read more into the sections on war and politics. In spite of basic premise (the ease with which power and decadence corrupt) it has a healthy dose of humor, magic and hope to balance the reality.

The New York Review of Books deserves high praise for bringing back the neglected classics for the enjoyment of both children and adults.

A Tender, Somber Fable

Parent and grandparents who think children ought to be shielded from reading fiction about love, honor, war, sacrifice, timidity, valor, betrayal, selfishness, vanity, illness, death, renunciation and the importance of self-awareness should on no account give Dino Buzzati's The Bears' Famous Invasion of Sicily to their small relatives.

In my view, the book allows children of the middle years and older to safely explore and discuss some of the big dark secrets of life, particularly adult life. With its unsentimentally stylish illustrations, intermittent, sometimes howlingly reached rhymes, but most of all its memorable characters, The Bears lives on in this hardcover version published by the New York Review Chidren's Collection.

Smaller in format then the orange cloth-covered original, the new edition sacrifices some of the visual impact of the full-page color illustrations. The pages of the new slick hardcover, too, lack the heft and hand of the immediate post-World War II original with its almost fuzzy post-scarcity paper. Those differences, though, are more than offset by the pleasure of having the book widely available again.

This is a big serious book about love, death, morality, human weakness, betrayal, talents hidden by misleading first impressions and the tendency to underestimate people who do not on first impression win favor in conventional eyes. The motive forces of love and tenderness, the importance and difficulty of discerning who is giving reliable advice, and who is not and why, the need for accuracy of information when making important decisions and of timing in determining whether action will be effective or not--like all good fables, the book teaches important, universal human lessons in readily accessible narrative form. That even wise and noble leaders may be mislead by plays upon their vanity-with disastrous consequence--is another lesson that never goes out of style.

Like Maus, The Bears uses non-human characters to wonderful effect, lightening and diffusing otherwise didactic purposes and effects. Buzzati's command of narrative is skillful and elegantly understated. The arc of the story begins in the mountains with a Prince's departure and ends there with a King's return. The mood is sometimes frolicsome, more often somber, even elegiac. The writer's journalistic discipline provides every detail needed to support plot, story, characters.

For a Hollywood ending, your young people are well directed to other books. To expose children--not very young ones, to be sure, perhaps starting around ten, depending on the child-- to appealing examples of empathy and the nuanced complexity of the human condition, not to mention the glory of word play and the pure, laugh-out-loud joy of silly rhymes, The Bears Famous Invasion still wins five stars in my house.

Just couldn't take my eyes off the drawings!!

Came across this book in our public library. My 8 year grandson loved it so much he finished it in one reading! (75 minutes)
Maybe it's too violent for some children, but I ordered one for my 6 year old granddaughter and I highly recommend it. Translated from the Italian, part prose, part poetry, and never a dull moment. It's not like anything else I've seen in children's books. And the drawings are fantastic!

The book was in perfection condition no CD was included from the previous owner. The person I bought it from was terrible. took two weeks to ship it then shipped it a compnay that never comes my way so it took longer for it to show up and i needed it for a class. i think the book its self was really helpful even if i didnt need it for class.

Robert Woodbury is a professor in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. His research is on how people develop and use interactive systems. Through work in computational design, people-centred systems for sustainability and visual analytics, he aims to discover general concepts and designs for systems that people find engaging and useful. He is a former Olympian and current dabbler in sailing.

Good Book

This book does a great job of explaining parametric modeling and its potential and current uses. The author speaks honestly about how current and future designers can/will/may use programing, geometry and math to create and solve problems. He does a great job of breaking this down. I feel the topic is so broad and has so much depth that any reader will want to purchase and read many books that intertwine with the topic (which the author lists a few recommendations). The topic is made of of multiple subjects and I think this book does a great job and should be part of a collection of books on the topic. I highly recommend this book to any person interested in parametric modeling.

Essential for Parametric Design

This book is the best reference for parametric design that I have found after a two year search. The chapter on programming alone is worth the cost of the book, because it helped me to understand the basic concepts of programming without the normal confusion. Start with this book for a strong foundation. It uses GC for the examples, but once you understand the concepts Revit and Vasari make so much more sense in terms of mass creation and editing. It allows you to dictate how the software behaves instead of just reacting to it's demands.

An Essential how-to guide

This is not one of the many books on "understanding" [a] serious mental illness. This book is a step-by-step guide to more successful interpersonal relationships between family and patients. No doctor or therapist will ever give you these essential tools, because therapists needn't live a life with your loved one - and may not even know what that life entails in a real and daily way. My daughter is a bipolar patient, diagnosed in 1981. Using this book, I have for the first time negotiated a crisis while knowing what to do and maintaining communication with her throughout the crisis. It is the book I always knew I needed. There is much more to serious mental illness than symptoms and medicine. This is the only book I have found that addresses the "more."

This book contains what so many mental health books lack: advice. The majority of books on mental health offer a medical or personal description of various mental health conditions. This book tells someone who loves or cares for a mentally ill friend or relative how to help and handle them.
It covers the basics of how to approach and talk to someone who may not be behaving or thinking rationally at the time, to how to work with insurance companies and locate help.
I have purchased dozens of books in my quest to help a loved one. While the majority have been useful, this is the one I wish I read first. If you need help understanding and working with mental illness, this book is a great starting point.

A successful expansion of his lecture series at Harvard, Thomas Kelly's First Nights chronicles the events leading to the first performances of five enduring masterpieces. He places Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo, Handel's venerable Messiah, symphonies by Beethoven and Berlioz, and the Stravinsky ballet The Rite of Spring in the respective contexts of the cities, musical cultures, and performance venues in which they were first heard. Kelly builds his chapters through an accumulation of minute but not trivial detail. The first Euridice in L'Orfeo was a castrato priest; the oppression of Catholics in Handel's Dublin was shocking; the legendary catcalls at The Rite of Spring's premiere began before the curtain went up.

As Kelly gathers these pieces of the puzzle together, we become desperate to find out what will happen, completely forgetting that we already know how the music ultimately triumphed over time. Along the way, there is hilarious information about the audiences (Handel's would not have been out of place at a rodeo, though Monteverdi's was unusually well informed) and reactions from the performers (conductor Pierre Monteux apparently always hated the Rite). There are also many factoids about how the music must have sounded. (Did you know that the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth included a piano?)

Kelly has provocative ideas about performance practice, suggesting that it is really a matter of how adaptable musicians need to be; he feels that musical works themselves, not just our perceptions of them, change over time. A great deal of First Nights is devoted to documents about the works, and the discography is helpfully annotated by Jen-Yen Chen. New Insights into Old Favorites

This book brings together an extraordinary amount of interesting information about 5 of the greatest works of Western music, in the context of trying to recreate their first performances. Kelly writes with the interest of an enthusiast, but the scholarly background is immense, as befits a university press book. Plenty of interesting illustrations and diagrams, and interesting pull-quotes in boxes, break up the text, enhancing readability. I had not previously been aware that the version heard at the first concert of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique was subjected to significant rewriting before being published in the form performed today -- this is typical of the interesting insights the book adds to common knowledge. Also, that Berlioz changed the selection of wind instruments, but that one can hear many of the originals on some recent recordings. My only disappointment was that Kelly stopped at 5 works - I would love a similar work-up of first performances of the Wagner Ring Cycle, Mozart's Figaro, and a major work of Mahler - perhaps the first performance of the 8th Symphony. I guess that just means that Kelly might profitably prepare a sequel!

A Coffee Table Book You Should Actually Read

It's easy as a listener to get caught up in the impact of great music on us today and to ignore the people who brought it about in the first place. Kelly has done a wonderful job of enlightening and enlivening my experience of these five works, four of which I've spent a lot of time with over the years. He brings together stories on the composition, the cultural setting, and the nuts and bolts of putting on the first performances in a way that both academics and popular readers will appreciate.

About the Author
Wareen D. Seider is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He received a B.S. degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. Seider has contributed to the fields of process analysis, simulation, design, and control. He co-authored FLOWTRAN. Simulation –An Introduction in 1974 and has coauthored the design course at Penn for over 20 years involving projects provided by many practicing engineers in the Philadelphia area. He has authored or coauthored over 80 journal articles and authored or edited six books.

J.D. Seader is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. From 1952 to 1959, he designed processes for Chevron Research and directed the development of one of the first computer-aided process design programs. From 1959 to 1965, he conducted rocket engine research for Rocketdyne on all of the engines that took astronauts to the moon. Before joining the faculty at the University of Utah in 1966, Saeder was a professor at the University of Idaho. He is the author or coauthor of 109 technical articles, seven books, and four patents.

Daniel R. Lewin is Professor of Chemical Engineering and the director of the Process Systems Engineering (PSE) research group at the Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology. He received his B.Sc. from the University of Edinburgh and his D.Sc. from the Technion. His research focuses on the interaction of Process design and process control and operations, with emphasis on model-based methods. He has authored and coauthored over 90 Technical publications in the area of process systems engineering, as well as the first edition of this textbook, and the multimedia CD that accompanies it.

Outdated a bit, but a well-written book for design.

While a little out of date, it's a book essential to a senior design class, especially for chemical engineers. Explains basic concepts of project cost estimation, process safety, equipment sizing, utility costs, and general design principles for a plant. This book is 10+ years old, but worked fine for my class this past year. Plenty of examples worked out, are shown. Specific tables relating to costs of equipment/materials, may differ from present value.

A former Student of Dr. Seider.

I was a student of Dr. Seider at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1970's. Reviewing the table of contents for this book, I recognize a lot of the material from courses I took with Dr. Seider at Penn. We studied material in Dr. Seider's class that was later published.

Dr. Seider is a very knowledgeable professor of chemical engineering.

He combined the academic aspects with the industrial field experience, and showed his students how to use the numerical methods to solve chemical engineeing problems.

The authors have used some of the new technologies and software packages to help undergraduate students master this material quicker than we could with the computation tools available in 1974. Sample code is available in the textbook that allows a student to concentrate on the process aspects of plant design, and not spend time writing and debugging computer code.

My own career took me into areas outside of chemical process design.

But the systematic, analytical methods taught by Dr. Seider still help me in resolving power plant performance problems.
