Great book

This book has been incredibly helpful. It's basically a cliff notes of everything emergency medicine. The chapters are laid out nicely and they are set up so if you have a specific problem, say abdominal pain, all of the information you need about the main causes of that will be laid out in the chapter on abdominal emergencies. This book has also been a great help with reviewing all of medicine before I start clinical rotations in a month. I can't recommend it enough!

I love emergency medicine and it impossible that i don't have this one. Chapters are quite well written. Flowcharts are helpful. Information is quite direct, to the point. I didnt give 5 star because i still use other EM books. didnt find the perfect one yet.

√ Use the Power of Storytelling

GREAT ANSWERS, GREAT QUESTIONS FOR YOUR JOB INTERVIEW is an extensive resource for use when preparing for a job interview. This book reminds me a little of another great book on job searching--Richard Bolles' What Color Is Your Parachute? 2015: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers. Bolles' book is a more general look at job searching, whereas this book focuses more specifically on interviewing. The authors have researched the job interview process in depth, and in this book tell you exactly what the interviewer is looking for, what you should do, and what you should NOT do.

SOME GREAT SECTIONS:

♦ How to use LinkedIn. Block talks extensively about getting your profile in shape. There are even examples of the best type of photograph to have in your profile. There are lots of things that I clearly had no idea about.
♦ "Shift the Focus from Experience to Expertise." Companies want someone who can be an expert--not just someone who has xx years of experience. "Experience does not necessarily differentiate you; expertise does... You need to project that you are the Andre Agassi of your field, an expert rather than a journeyman who has put in her or his time." Never thought of it like that.
♦ Example of the type of form that an interviewer will be filling out. Aha! Now I know what the stern man is doing! This gives you insight on the interviewer's agenda.
♦ Big emphasis on "role playing" to prepare for an interview. Take a video of yourself, practice answering the tough questions. Use index cards to practice. Understand the tough interview questions, and the best response to each. "Use real examples from the past. This is huge."
♦ Getting good at interviewing has nothing to do with luck, and everything to do with preparation. "People who become great at something get there through tons of hard, intentional work.
♦ To support his practice recommendations, Block mentions two great works in the field of expertise, each of which suggests that massive, dedicated practice is the key to expertise--not special talent:
Outliers: The Story of Success and
The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How.

I would also suggest,
Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else.

OTHER GOOD IDEAS:

♦ Prepare a script to break the ice with the interviewer.
♦ Avoid the tiresome, usual responses to the "What is your greatest weakness" question.
♦ Some good questions for you to ask of the interviewer. Show that you have done your homework, and know a lot about the company.
♦ Savvy tips on negotiating a salary and benefits. Never tell them your minimum salary requirements!

FORMATTING:

I appreciate the fact that the links in the Table of Contents actually work properly in my Kindle edition. There is also a detailed index at the rear of the book.

Best source for any recipe

I have many cookbooks, but I love my Cooks illustrated, America test kitchen and Cooks Country. I never am disappointed in there recipes. Ever recipe turns out the way it should. I bake quite a bit. I baked and liked bread and rolls from Fr. Dominic Garramone and the Egg Harbor bread from Beards bread cookbook. Then I baked 2 loaves of the buttermilk bread from my Cooks Country and the family let me know that I had a winner. The unbromated and unbleached flour in combination with buttermilk, Land of Lakes butter, clean honey and Himalayan Salt puts it over the top. I also check my bread for doneness with a digital read out thermometer. Buying these test kitchen cookbooks takes the doubt and uncertainness out of the question of the quality of the recipes. I give the new complete Cooks Country show recipes as wedding presents which are one source complete recipe books with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We'll I have to leave I'm picking strawberries today. Then I'm going to use this book for strawberry heaven. The smell of fresh baked goods is my only home deodorizer. I bake all my bread when the family tucks themselves snuggly in bed at night. This retired cop learned well from his fantastic Swedish Farm girl mother.

Awesome desserts when typos don't mess them up

The best general book on baked goods out there.

THE GOOD:

The recipes -- as with all Cooks Illustrated books, the people at America's Test Kitchens have tried every variation reasonably possible to come up with baked goods that taste the best to a majority of people and don't contain any wasted steps (such as macerating apples in sugar before baking them in a pie). For instance, for their cranberry nut bread, which is one of the most delicious baked goods I've ever tried, they experimented with different sweeteners (sugar, brown sugar, orange juice, etc.), different liquids (milk, buttermilk, yoghurt) and various leveners, all to come up with a moist, not-too-sweet, flavorful treat.

The organization -- the book is organized into types of baked goods: quick breads, yeast breads, cakes, pies and tarts, cookies, etc. Each section has an index that lists the recipes in that section plus the variations on each main recipe. For example, under apple pie, there are varations for apple-cranberry, apple-bluberry, apple-ginger and so on.

The pictures -- there aren't a lot of pictures, but the ones ther e are are gorgeous and inspiring.

The illustrations -- there are myriad illustrations showing how to do such things as line a baking pan to make removal of bar cookies clean and easy, how to roll out pie dough, how to toast nuts, etc. These illustrations help make the instructions particularly easy to follow and show how to simplify complicated baking steps. Easily the best thing about this book.

The instructions -- amounts are given in both volume (cups) and weight (ounces) so that bakers with scales can use the most precise measurements but that bakers without scales can use the recipes, too. Everything is crystal clear, including decriptions for how to tell when something is done by how the dessert looks and behaves, so that you don't have to worry so much about whether your oven is exactly the same as the ones the authors used. Instructions run from purchasing items all the way through to slicing.

The tips -- plenty of useful tips on ingredients, which equipment works the best for each task (down to brand names) and which is the best value, to how to prepare, shop, store and work with different pieces of equipment and ingredients.

The summaries -- some people don't care about all the things the authors tried, but there is a summary for each recipe if you're interested, and it helps to explain why to use certain ingredients and when you can substitute, which helps one to become a better baker all around and eventually lets you personalize the recipes to suit your taste, not to mention helping you learn to create your own. This eliminates a slew of baking errors as they tell you what not to do as well as what works. But you can just as easily ignore the summaries and follow the recipes alone.

THE BAD:

It would have been nice had they included some non-baked desserts , such as ice cream. The ice cream recipes in The New Best Recipe are fantastic, but they would make sense in a book that has so many desserts that go well with ice cream. Also, you won't find anything fancy here -- the recipes are for pretty basic items, although anything basic you want is probably in here, with the possible exception of an all-butter pie crust, which is inexplicably left out. You only get items that the authors think are the easiest and best all-around for the category. In any event, since other bakers aren't always as thorough in trying out recipes, when I want to make something fancy, I find it helpful to consult Baking Illustrated for techniques and ingredients so that I can intelligently change recipes from other cookbooks that don't quite work.

THE UGLY:

This book has a shocking number of significant typos and inconsistencies. Two examples: The recipe for basic pie dough calls for twice as much shortening as is correct. After making a gooey mess, I double-checked the recipe in The New Best Recipe and in Cooks Illustrated online, and found that Baking Illustrated indeed contains a typo -- the amount of shortening should be 1/2 cup, not 1 cup. In the recipe for Pecan Bars, the crust calls for 1/4 cup of pecans, and the filling for 2 cups, but in the instructions for the filling it says to add the remaing 1 3/4 cups. Thankfully I have a subscription to Cooks Illustrated online (a fantastic website), so I could confirm that the 1 3/4 cups was correct. (As an aside, the recipe online calls for the same ingredients as in the book, but with an entirely different technique).

In short, this is a great book other than the sloppy editing job and is highly recommended for both beginning and experienced bakers.

Best Recipes you will find!

What's so wonderful about this book is that there is a story to go with each recipe. Instead of me looking at the recipe and saying, well.. this would be a good thing to try, or maybe this... or that... etc etc, they have all the things they tried and why they didn't like the outcome. Finally a book of recipes that has all the mistakes already made for me, so I can just enjoy the baking part! :D My favorite recipe is the "White Cake" It's splendid, and is much like a traditional wedding cake. I've made dozens of them and every time I get the same response... THIS IS AMAZING!!!! I even purchased the book for my Mom, as she Loves to bake as well. I haven't had anything out of this book yet that wasn't great! :)

Excellent Primer

This is a great tutorial for anyone somewhat familiar with AutoCAD. It walks you right through from one exercise to another, with immediate results and increased confidence.
I worked through the book in about 2 weeks (1 exercise / night) and feel fairly knowledgeable with respect to many of the basics - and I knew zip about this before.
The book skips much of the laborious details found in other tutorials (left mouse-click to select, etc.) and gets right to the good stuff. Wastes little time in explaining everything, and assumes (mostly correctly) that you'll get it through repetition.
If browsing for a book to get familiar with MDT6, this is a good one.

This is a list of Karl Terzaghi's first 256 papers and reports - by Bjerrum, et al., John Wiley and Sons, 1960. An update was published by Geotechnique, March 1964.
Terzaghi won the Norman Medal of ASCE four times (1930, 1943, 1946, and 1955). He was given nine honorary doctorate degrees from universities in eight different countries. He started modern soil mechanics with his theories of consolidation, lateral earth pressures, bearing capacity, and stability.

This book is great! It contains great peices of music for the snare drummer. It is made to be rudimentaly sound. Meaning the solo's are full of many rudiments. This makes it full of great playback, and full of great learning. The solo's range from diffucult to very diffucult. It is not for the the faint at heart drummer. Hodge Podge(the easiest solo) cannot be played unless you have the ability to play rolls(5/7/9/10/11/13),flams,ruffs,and sixteenth notes with accompyning eight notes. The hardest title is My Friend Norman and Gingersnap. The 6/8 excercies are very diffucult in their own right. This is great solo book for any above average to advanced snare drummer!

A Timeless Classic for Rudimental Snare Drummers

John Pratt's book is a staple that all serious percussionists should play at some point. Pratt utilizes many rudiments in every solo and incorporates a lot of "over the barline" techniques. Many of my own drum students have performed these solos for solo and ensemble festivals and recitals. This book is a great tool for drummers in the medium to advanced stages. I highly recommend!

These snare drum solos are AWESOME! Challenging, MUSICAL (yes all caps), and FUN to play. Each solo contains many rudiments which are listed at the bottom of each piece. The phrasing used is great, alot of "over the bar" phrases, and sweet sticking patterns. GREAT book, if you do not own it and want to work on your chops this book will help tremendously. One of the best things about this book is that the solos sound awesome, are musical, and are FUN to play.

These are not boring rudimental exercises like so many other snare drum solos, these are (again) VERY well written, musical, fun sounding and fun to play.

One of the BEST books ever written for snare drum solos. A GREAT price, for what it is actually worth it is practically free.
