It started off okay but turned south. When Nick was a mean jerk to break things off it made no sense. He didn't even try to just say it wasn't going to work out. Sergio was also horrible. Liv was a bad friend. Liv's mom withheld info that she was asked to pass on to alleviate her fears. It made no sense. I didn't care for it.

An encyclopedia for all the songs of Bob Dylan

This is the book for every Bob Dylan fan. Encyclopedic in scope it covers every Dylan song there is with a concise, scholarly buffered by trivia and asides with a brief essay on the recording of every album. This will certainly be a welcome addition to all fans of music and poetry and in particular the Dylan fans out there. Some of the interpretations of the songs may leave you scratching your head but there are many more that will open help you understand them better and in truth Dylan is so prolific and his output so diverse that no single man can be expected to explain the mind set of the singer on every song but there is certainly nothing to diminish how complete and through this book is. The perfect coffee table book.

"A THEATER OF EMOTIONS CONSTANTLY TRANSFORMED, A DEEPLY HUMAN DRAMA."

This book is very similar to the Beatles book "All The Songs" in format, so if you're perused that book you have a good idea of what this new book is like. Bob Dylan fans (and maybe even Dylanologists) will want this thick tome covering Dylan's 492 studio songs from 1962's self-titled "Bob Dylan" album up through 2015 and the "Shadows In The Night" album. Everything (songs that Dylan performed on) is arranged chronologically from his first album, with information including musicians, producers, engineers,studios, song lengths, cover designs, and release dates. Each album has an essay on the background of that album which helps set everything in perspective for the songs on that particular album. Also here are short essays on the background of the tunes, and some essays are longer than others if there's more pertinent information about a particular song. Dylan's soundtrack albums are also included but not in the same depth of information as his proper albums. There's also information on various compilation albums, outtakes (but space did not permit writing about all the tunes released in 2014 on the "Basement Tapes Complete" set ), and on the official bootleg series albums too. Much of the information is backed up with footnotes. There's also a Glossary and a (much needed) Index included.

Plus there's a lot of great photographs throughout the book--some you've no doubt seen--others perhaps not. Photo subjects include Dylan on stage and in the studio across his career, an early photo of the Greenbriar Boys with Dylan at Gerde's from 1961, one-man band Jesse Fuller, Dave Van Ronk, Suze Rotolo, Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, the Byrds, Bobbie Gentry, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi John Hurt, and a number of others who crossed paths with Dylan.

Another nice inclusion is short bits of interesting trivia concerning various songs ("According to Rolling Stone rankings, "If Dogs Run Free" is one of the ten worst Dylan songs", or on the song "Went To See The Gypsy" ("At 1:14 the drums disappear for four beats. The sound engineer's error?"), which add more depth and information to an already info-packed book. Some of the information included as short side-bars is fairly esoteric--like a line from "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"--which was inspired by a folk song "I Wish I Was A Mole In The Ground"--which was recorded in the 1920's by Bascom Lunsford, an Appalachian singer. But everything in this well laid out book adds up to the most in-depth look at Dylan's music ever published.

As I wrote above, no Dylan fan will want to be without this book for reference, or just to browse for interesting bits of information about Dylan's songs. With all the many great photos, the deep well of information throughout (but there are informational errors here), and an intelligent layout, this book is indispensable for Dylan fans. Add this to your library.

A fun look at all the songs

There are lots of books about Bob Dylan. Some of them are interesting, some are simply ways to make some cash. Since Dylan has such a devoted following, books about the singer tend to sell quite well. There have been a number of new books about Dylan in the past couple of years, ranging from biographies to a book about Dylan fans; from his complete lyrics, to sketchy collections of criticism of his work.

Just in time for Christmas comes Bob Dylan: All the Songs (Amazon.com, Amazon UK). Written by French journalist Philippe Margotin and musician and engineer Jean-Michel Guesdon, this book follows the duo’s All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Beatles Release. In this book, the authors present each Dylan album, and each song it contains, discussing how the songs were recorded, when, with which musicians, and discussing, it times, lyrics, cover versions, and trivia (in “For Dylanologists” sidebars).

It’s a light-hearted book, designed to be skimmed rather than read. You might be listening to a Dylan album and want to read up on the songs it contains; or you might want to just flip through it and look up information about your favorite songs. There are lots of pictures, and the texts are short. It’s much more interesting than the recent Dylan: Disc by Disc (Amazon.com, Amazon UK), by Jon Bream, who simply transcribes interviews with mostly C-list musicians and unknown journalists about each album. And it’s a lot less dry than Clinton Heylin’s Revolution in the Air (Amazon.com, Amazon UK) and Still on the Road (Amazon.com, Amazon UK), which present similar information in a pretty boring manner.

There’s nothing earth-shattering in this book; the “stories” behind every track don’t explain what the songs are about (as if that were possible), or try to interpret Dylan’s inspiration when he was recording them. But for Dylan fans who are curious about the creative process, it does give some insight into how the songs were recorded and how, in many cases, they changed throughout recording sessions.

If you’re a hard-core Dylan fan, you’ll want to buy this book, especially at the price at the time of this writing, around $28 or £26 (Amazon.com, Amazon UK). It won’t change the way you listen to the music, but it will provide hours of interesting reading.

Disappointed in time it took for delivery.

I did not ask for the British version of our "Cliff Notes". However, it came up first in my request for the actual book. I didn't realize the book was coming from England either--hence a much longer delivery time. So I wound up without the book, but with the "York Notes" (which were excellent) too late for my Book Club night. Be sure you carefully read before you order. I am told all of this info was contained somewhere or another, which I sure did miss.

The description fails to mention that this does not include the actual book and is marked up with highlighters. I am very disappointed and will have to throw it in the trash. Too bad I can't afford to order the book now that I'm out for the cliff notes I didn't want.

An Amalgamation of Fiction and Reality

In the fictional Republic of Gilead, the dramatic decrease of birthrates makes the society's fundamental goal is to control reproduction. Written from Offrend's first person point of view, the novel adds to the reader's connection with a Handmaid, her tormented feelings, and hatred toward this new totalitarian regime. Gilead is based on the precept that giving birth is women's religious and moral duty and those who do not fulfill it will be sent to hell (aka the Colonies) where the "unwomen" are left to die. With its modern setting, and reference to our present, the novel makes the reader shift between two different worlds: the narrator's and ours. For example, Atwood references Harvard as a place where the disobedient are hung and ironically she always hears the echoes of the old world where museums, stores, and the military where all used for their supposed purposes.
With Biblical allusions, and references to WWII, as in "mayday" and the totalitarian regimes of Stalin and Hitler, Atwood creates a masterful piece of a fictional world still connected to the reality.
With its ambiguous ending, the novel lets the mind ponder on what can become of this now familiar narrator. Is death better for her? Or if rescued, will she return to her family? The fact that the ending is hopeful adds to the greatness of the book.
Its only flaw, however, was its introduction of minor characters that we never get to learn about. Offred often mentions her daughter's name but she never talks about her. Otherwise, Atwood's use of syntax is a great indicator of the narrator is shifting tones- from hope to desperation, from fear to indifference, from love to passion. She constantly uses flashback about her family and her former life to demonstrate her criticism of Gilead where women are containers valued for only what is inside of them.
In order to serve the needs of the new society's elite, Gilead creates a system of titles where women are defined solely by their gender roles as Wives, Handmaids, or Marthas. Stripping them of individual names strips them of their individuality. In a moment of desperation, Offred cries out in vain, "I want to be held and told my name. I want to be valued, in ways that I am not; I want to be more than valuable. I repeat my former name; remind myself of what I once could do, how others saw me. I want to steal something" (Atwood 97).
Deprived from her basic rights, Offred frustration and anger is revealed by her use of simple sentences with anaphora to stress her futile but desperate longing for attention.

This story is very unlike The Neverending Story and Momo

As one of my favorite authors, reading every Michael Ende book is an important priority for me. However, let me warn you that this story is very unlike The Neverending Story and Momo. It is really just a sequence of short stories; each sounding like a recap of a dream (as Ende writes, somewhere between awake and asleep).

The illustrations, though fascinating, make little sense in relation to most of the stories. However, it is interesting to point out that they were drawn by Edgar Karl Alfons Ende, Michael's father, who was a Germany surrealism painter.

Since it is impossible to provide a detailed overview without a super long summary of all twenty nine different stories, I will briefly describe how it starts and how it ends.

Story overview:
---------------
We begin with Hor; a man who is unable to speak in anything other than a whisper. He lives in a house with endless rooms. The only windows are ones that open into the next room, which looks just the same as the former. He lives off a yellowish, slightly transparent substance that resides on the walls and columns.

Hor claims to have kept a faithful record (I assume he means, mentally,) and then the following twenty eight stories unfold. When we come to the last story we find ourselves in a snow-covered plain. In the midst of the plain are the ruins of a wall. In the wall is a closed door. The peculiar thing is--other than a door appearing in a wall in the middle of nowhere--one can easily walk around to simply see the other side of the door. It is as if it only goes from one side of the wall to the other.

Two sentries keep guard to prevent anyone from entering or leaving. That is, until one day when a young man, accompanied by a Princess--by her bidding--ventures inside. His mission is to find and destroy her evil brother that lives within, and this brother's name happens to be Hor.

My thoughts:

Very interesting stories. Deep, insightful, sometimes confusing, yet wonderfully intriguing. I particular liked the story of the man being guided across a desert only to end up an old man when he finally meets his fiancé, who sets out to find her fiancé not knowing it is him. The twist was that he too saw an old woman greet him before his adventure, which obviously was the same woman. Yes, I know, it is strange, which is why I do not suggest this for the modern "only" reader. It is very esoteric in a sophisticated sort of way, if that makes sense. In other words, do not pick this up for light and easy reading. Pick it up to be fascinated and confounded. If you find dreams interesting, than this book is for you.

Things to consider:

This is probably not appropriate for a younger audience. Aside from the fact that most modern youth would be bored by the third page, there are some adult themes here: a few references to nudity, some to sexual situations, and some slightly crude. There are also several disturbing scenes such as the man with a doll-like face who devoured human viscera (intestines) from a bowl. But these things take on the creative form that makes sense for these dream-like tales. I would say later teens and older. Not specificity target towards men or women.

A very good book

I read the book many times, and I know some of the stories from memory. The book has a very strong mood, and Ende's father's pictures are making it even more strong. Most of the stories are sad, and each of them is very thought-provoking. I recommend it for everybody, who likes Ende's other writings.

A journey into mind

I read this years ago, now, and regret selling my copy. I am looking for another copy, to keep. I remember how the very final *word* in the book caught me by surprise, left me gasping for breath, although I suppose a more sophisticated reader would have seen it coming.
The book is a series of vignettes through which a number of themes are woven. For me, the most important among these was the idea of people trapped in stasis by their own cowardice - unwilling to change for fear that all their effort up till now will have been wasted. Reading this book was instrumental in eventually breaking me out of a religious group I was involved in, although I did not realize it at the time.
Have a read of this, and Edmund D Cohen's "The Mind of the Bible Believer".

This is a thoroughly updated edition of Dynamic Asset Pricing Theory, the standard text for doctoral students and researchers on the theory of asset pricing and portfolio selection in multiperiod settings under uncertainty. The asset pricing results are based on the three increasingly restrictive assumptions: absence of arbitrage, single-agent optimality, and equilibrium. These results are unified with two key concepts, state prices and martingales. Technicalities are given relatively little emphasis, so as to draw connections between these concepts and to make plain the similarities between discrete and continuous-time models.

Readers will be particularly intrigued by this latest edition's most significant new feature: a chapter on corporate securities that offers alternative approaches to the valuation of corporate debt. Also, while much of the continuous-time portion of the theory is based on Brownian motion, this third edition introduces jumps--for example, those associated with Poisson arrivals--in order to accommodate surprise events such as bond defaults. Applications include term-structure models, derivative valuation, and hedging methods. Numerical methods covered include Monte Carlo simulation and finite-difference solutions for partial differential equations. Each chapter provides extensive problem exercises and notes to the literature. A system of appendixes reviews the necessary mathematical concepts. And references have been updated throughout. With this new edition, Dynamic Asset Pricing Theory remains at the head of the field.

J. Darrell Duffie is the James Irvin Miller Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business. Stanford University. He teaches and does research in the area of asset valuation, risk management, credit risk modeling, and fixed-income and equity markets. His other books include Security Markets, Stochastic Models, and Futures Markets.

Finance for economists

This book provides the most elegant and coherent synthesis of finance theory, in a complete markets and frictionless settings.

For the reader interested in the theoretical foundations of modern financial models, this book has three main advantages over many of its competitors:

- It clearly shows the link between modern finance theory and the 40-year old Arrow-Debreu model. As this book will make clear, financial assets can be viewed as "bundles" of Arrow-Debreu contingent goods, and pricing kernels are simply extensions of Arrow-Debreu contingent state prices.

- It bridges the gap between arbitrage models on one hand, and models based on consumption, optimization/dynamic programming and general equilibrium on the other hand. Absence of arbitrage guarantees the existence of a stochastic discount factor, or pricing kernel. Optimality implies that the stochastic discount factor must be equal to the investors' intertemporal marginal rate of substitution.

- It provides a unified treatment of discrete-time and continuous-time models. Many finance textbooks focus on the mathematic tools and emphasize the difference between continuous-time and discrete-time tools--usually at the expense of the economics underlying both types of models. In contrast Duffie's book emphasizes the conceptual unity between continuous-time and discrete-time asset pricing.

This book was written more for students and academics than for pratictioners. It is not a reference or a recipe book for traders and programmers. Several chapters are devoted to general-equilibrium models that pratictioners are not likely to find useful. However, the essentials of derivative asset pricing and the term structure are also covered. The latest edition even includes a chapter on corporate finance.

Finally, this book is pretty much self-contained. All the graduate-level math results used in the proofs are presented either in the main body of the book, or in appendices.

Demanding but rewarding!

First of all, this book is for people with advanced mathematical preparation. Courses in functional analysis, measure theory, stochastic calculus and vector space optimization are in my opinion required for a deep understanding of the material in the book. Fortunately, the appendices are very good and provide many things that can help someone to follow the book.
In the first four chapters the writer develops the discrete-time theory,in order to provide a better understanding of the underlying ideas which remain the same in the next chapters which deal with the continuous-time setting.
Although the book needs a lot of effort from the reader, it is unique in that can help you see beyond the mathematics. In other words it USES the mathematics and it isn't just a layout of theorems and proofs.
Of course it can't be compared with books like Hull as it isn't accessible to everyone. But someone with the mathematical preparation , who has read Hull , should buy this book and he will never regret it.

painful and obscure

The mathematics of finance is not trivial, but neither is it really all that difficult; nevertheless, Duffie works to make you think that it is.

I maintain a scale of good versus bad mathematics writing in my head, against which I calibrate books I read. This scale stretches from, at one end, the faculty of Moscow University, in particular Israel Gelfand, Vladimir Arnold and Andre Kolmogorov, all of whom manage to explain to me hard things so that they seem easy, to, at the other, Darrell Duffie.
