About the Author
VALERIE STEIKER, the editor of this book, is the culture editor at Vogue and the author of The Leopard Hat: A Daughter's Story and the editor, with Chris Knutsen, of a collection of essays, Brooklyn Was Mine. The ten illustrators are: from America, Helen Dryden, Harriet Meserole, Rita Senger, E.M.A Steinmetz, Arthur Gavin Finley, and George Wolfe Plank; from France, Georges Lepape, Pierre Mourgue, André Marty; and from Spain, Eduardo García Benito. Most of them were born in the 1880s or '90s; some, even the Americans, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris; one—George Wolfe Plank—was self taught; and Arthur Gavin Finley also moonlighted as a magician, called Henry Gavin, credited with the invention of the Tent Vanish Trick.

26 Fashion Designs plus fold-out and more – American Vogue Covers – printed on both sides of page

[[VIDEOID:2427d63a305d1f35d68a1b7056e1961d]]At the time that I write this review, there two different Vogue coloring books that have just been released. The other one is based on British Vogue and this book is based on American Vogue magazine. They are quite different in time period, style, and print.

There are 26 designs based on magazine covers from 1912 to 1932. Each one is associated with a letter of the alphabet. For example, the first one I chose to color (using Prismacolor Premier Soft Core pencils) is of a young woman pushing a wheelbarrow of flowers on a windy day. The magazine is from June 15, 1915, and the editors of this book associated the design with W for wheelbarrow. The design is on the front of the back and the letter and stylized illustration (plus W is for wheelbarrow) is on the back of the page.

In addition to the 26 designs, there are coloring opportunities on the fold out flaps of the front and back cover. Better still is a lovely four page fold-out at the back of the book which is printed front and back with a design from each of the years between 1912 and 1932.

All of the designs include some small details that may be a bit difficult to color. The artwork is appears to have been sketched but the lines are a tad squiggly and there are disconnects that make it more difficult to color. I also noted that the title and other print on the designs have been done with a weird wiggly typeface. I think that the point is to make the design appear vintage but, in many cases, it merely makes it look a little odd. This issue would not keep me from buying the book as I really love the designs otherwise but it certainly impacts my enjoyment of it. If I could place a rating of 4.5 on this book, I would do so; however, as I cannot, I always round up to the next highest star.

I will provide more detail about the physical coloring book below but here is a quick overview of what I found:

Alcohol-based markers seep through this page slightly
Water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens do not seep through the page
Coloring pencils work well with this paper but have blending issues

The designs in this book are printed on both sides of the page. The paper used is really nice heavyweight, white, and non-perforated. The actual fashion designs are on one side of the page while the letter associated is on the back. For me, that equals a waste page if I want to use alcohol-based markers. If I use any other medium, I can also color that back page as well.

The binding is both glued and sewn (with lots of little stitches that are impossible to snip.) The designs do not merge into the binding area. You will have to cut pages out if you want to remove them from the book but you won't lose any portion of the design in doing so. I would have loved to seen perforations on this coloring book for easy removal for framing, This is a fairly thick book but getting it to open flat was really easy.

There are many extras such as the fashion elements on both the front and back page fold-outs as well as the four-page fold-out printed with 21 fashionable designs – one for each of the years represented by the covers. There is also a full color thumbnail of each of the cover designs with a short blurb about it should you wish to follow the original colors. I went my own way for my first project but I certainly had fun looking at the original, seeing the designer, and getting the history of the outfit.

I test my coloring books with various medium (which I will list in the comments area for anyone interested in the list.) My tests are not exhaustive as I spend about half an hour per book with my tests. The tests do give me an idea of how the different medium react to the paper but not the experience of coloring a full design. Here are the results of my tests on this book:

Alcohol-based markers do bleed through but only the tiniest bit. No other wet medium bleed through at all. That includes water-based markers, India ink pens, and gel pens. Gel pens definitely require more drying time than usual.

Coloring pencils worked well for regular coverage and for layering. My issue arose with blending. My blends were very uneven – with a much darker stain in the middle and only slight color to the sides I was blending. This was true of both wax and oil based pencils. I would have liked to have attempted some blending, especially in the backgrounds but, at least at my skill level, I will have to abstain. My hard lead pencils worked well – but I don't attempt to blend those as that is not how I use them. I find that they are good for some detail areas where my soft lead pencil tips cannot fit.

A Captivating Coloring Book!

A stunning book! As I leafed through the pages, I was riveted by the attention to detail. The motifs on the endpapers begin the journey and as a bonus, can be colored. The Vogue covers provide just enough black lines to color - but not too much - and the paper quality is excellent. I especially love the pullout pages of dresses from 1912-1932 - reminded me of paper doll books from my childhood. Also, the colorized versions of the Vogue covers appear in the back, in case you need some inspiration! Am buying copies for my friends and their children. What a delight!

The prose is elegant, beautiful and at times haunting, and the plot flows well

About loss, responsibility, magic and family, SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY manages to do something fairly rare in the world of middle grade novels --- it reads like it's a book anyone could enjoy. I was surprised from the start that the prose doesn't talk down to its audience, doesn't expect kids to refuse to face some difficult concepts and dark themes. Not that the book is difficult, exactly, but it is complex in ways that caught me a little off guard and made me enjoy the book on a deeper level.

The story follows Cordelia, the oldest daughter of a family whose mother has just disappeared. Like magic, one day she was there and the next was gone. Her disappearance has left a wound in the family, and Cordelia, only 11 years old herself, struggles to pick up the slack. She watches her two younger sisters and tries to earn some money, but the stress and the anger at her abandonment festers and she finds herself more and more upset and yearning.

SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY does an amazing job with its young protagonists, namely Cordelia and her younger sister Ione. The bond of sisterhood that draws them together is often tested as Ione chafes under Cordelia's attempts to make up for their mother's absence. And when that absence becomes too difficult to explain, it is their relationship that creates the story of the Selkies: the story that their mother didn't leave of her own will but had to return to the sea as a Selkie and is now trapped in seal form. It's tragic and it's gripping and it's dark, and it's also what makes this book so magical, what gives it a dynamic and moving story arc.

Because, though at first the story is a lie that Cordelia tells to quiet her sister, it soon becomes something more than that, and Cordelia finds herself wanting to believe it, too. It is the crux of a plot that overall might be mistaken as simple, but that I think is focused. There is a weight to SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY, a potency that would have easily been diluted by introducing more action, more characters, more storylines.

What SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY does is tell a very clean and emotional story featuring children that feel real. The only complaint I had was the conflict with the gruff old fisherman who hates Selkies. I didn’t think the book does a bad job with him, he just seemed a little too…out of place, at times, like he had nothing to do other than participate in the novel. Still, even he is used to good effect to build the mythology of the Selkies.

The book blurs the line between magic and mundane, making for a slightly surreal but very enjoyable experience. The prose is elegant, beautiful and at times haunting, and the plot flows wells; it held my attention tight before coasting into the ending that is powerful and effective. All in all, I think SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY provides an engaging and lyrical story of children coming to grips with their first brush of loss and adult responsibility, forced to grow up before their time but unable to fully slip from the magic of childhood. It is a story tinged with sadness and tragedy and barely controlled anger, but it is also a story of family and understanding and setting aside fear. All that in just under 200 pages. It's quite a read.

Very clear and informative. This is a very good material for an undergraduate/graduate course. Straight to the point with focus on details. The only bad thing is that the kindle edition is not perfect (some images are bigger than the margins) but the printed version is flawless.

Achieve thr Most from Elements 14

This is a reference book and not intended to be read cover-to-cover. That being said, its author - Scott Kelby - is an icon in the world of nonprofessional photographers and is the sole reason why I selected this particular book as my reference for Elements 14. Kelby's writing style is over-the-top enjoyable, combining "elements" of both clarity and humor.

I purchase PE every other version, on the even numbers...so this was the year to upgrade to PE14. And with each new version of Elements, I purchase Scott Kelby's Book for Digital Photographers. It is the primary book I use as my source to answer questions about the software.

A Toolbox of Information

I recently saw the author fly a Phantom 3 Professional over Fort San Lorenzo, a UNESCO Heritage site on the shores of Panama and also over a remote rainforest village in Panama's Darian Province. Watching drones in action inspired me to learn more about their applications, especially the types of comparative maps generated by drones.

This book teaches readers:
1) about aerial photogrammetry (which benefits from a new generation of software for cameras placed on drones),
2) how to prepare a variety of flight plans, and gear up in a light or low cost way,
3) how to fly, photograph, and process images and stitch them together into maps, and also,
4) there is a helpful comparison of the best drones available for mapping purposes.

It provides the information to create your own drone-based map mosaics for areas and times of your choosing. It is a practical field guide for drone-flying novices and will enhance the skills of experienced enthusiasts. Every page has helpful diagrams or insightful photos.

As a doctor, I am very curious about the use of UAV technology in humanitarian response and first crisis. I have found this book to be a great introduction to the complex world of drone mapping, providing the basis to understand the potential of this growing industry. Field guides for photogrammetry are rare, and it's great that Mr. Calvo (you can't use his first name in an Amazon review!) has taken the time to put this book together. It's a good overview of photogrammetry using fixed-wing and multirotor drones, but needs to be supplemented with additional research once one decides on an aerial platform to fly and software for processing. Think of the book as a high-level primer on the topic rather than an in-depth dive. It's extremely image heavy, and I often wanted more text to clarify and discuss points in greater detail, especially when technical terms are mentioned casually and without explanation. One other issue is that the organization and layout can be distracting; the content is good, but the layout can get in the way. I found this to be porn with little plot. I found myself skimming the sex to try and find plot. I just couldn't get into the characters, there wasn't enough there.
She's written extensively as Jordan Silver. If suggest you find one of her stories (I.e. The Lyon series) and enjoy those.

A must read for any A/R clerk, A/R manager, or controller/CFO

This is a very well written book. However, it is not intended for someone who has never been in accounts receivable. There is an assumption that the reader has heard of Sarbanes-Oxley and other accounts receivable terminology. The book provides numerous case studies which are excellent ways the author drove home and supported his points.

As someone who has been in accounts receivable but has never been an A/R manager, I feel very comfortable and confident in interviewing for an A/R manager position now. I was even able to ad a few points to my resume.

The author provides numerous suggestions on how to improve the inflow of cash you, yourself can implement immediately.

I read the entire book in one weekend; 192 pages with many additional case studies in the back as well as throughout the chapters.

You will not be disappointed in this book!
