The second rehearsal is just a matter of going straight through the script with actors and musicians. This pageant can be staged with as few or as many sets, costumes, and props as you desire. It works equally well with no costumes or sets (read with scripts in hand), as it does with a full production of costumes, scenery, and every word memorized. Vocal/piano scores for the sung music selections of the pageant are included. The arrangements of the Christmas carols used during and between the acts afford you the option of having a choir, a soloist, or instrumentalists, or others to participate in the pageant.

Dennis Hartin is a graduate of Claremont School of Theology with an M.A. in Religion (emphasis in communication). Dennis has written for the ABC Radio Networks, the Episcopal Church Center, Theatre Three (Port Jefferson, New York), and DadsWorld.com He is active in the ministry programs of First Presbyterian Church of Northport, New York. Dennis has written three Christmas Pageants for Abingdon Press: The Surprising Christmas (2003), The Backward Christmas Pageant (2004), and The Very Important Christmas Pageant (2006).

Congregation enjoyed it.

The children at our church performed this pageant last week, and the congregation really enjoyed it. It is a humorous play in 3 acts: 1) Mary is told by the angel about the birth of Jesus, and she and Joseph are told in Bethlehem by the hotel clerk that their reservation at the inn has been cancelled; 2) some shepherds on the hillside are told of the birth of Jesus by some angels, and 3) the wise men visit Herod's palace on their way to visit the holy family. The script is written such that a child only has to attend the rehearsals for the 1 act in which their character appears. We did this on 2 three-hour rehearsals: one for staging, and one dress rehearsal with all the extra angels, lambies, etc. The kids mostly learned their lines at home before rehearsals started. The script includes a CD containing many things, most of which I didn't need, but it did have a recording of a "junk band" (which is required in Act 2), and a recording of a trumpet giving a herald call, used when the angel appears, and also when Herod is announced in his palace.

The script, as I said, is humorous. For example, Mary, when visited by the angel, thinks she is a solicitor and asks her to put them on her "do not call list". Our congregation laughed at all the right places and seemed to enjoy the humor. There are many practical suggestions in the text accompanying the script.

Best Christmas Pageant Ever!

We did this at the first church I served & it went over so very well that I had to get it for my next church. Adding a bit of humor to the traditional story is just what the people need sometimes. We even added pogo sticks to the kings the first time around. Maybe this time it will be a skateboard - you never know how the Holy Spirit will move you to be creative when using this pageant! If you're wondering which pageant you should buy - look no further. This one will not disappoint!

good but not perfect

I choose this pageant for our church because I liked the promise of brief rehersals. The format worked well, the children practiced in individual acts two times, one all act run through and one dress rehersal. NO PROBLEM with that limited amount of time MAINLY because we had tryouts for parts two weeks in advance and then required the children to come to the first practice with lines memorized. Some used printed scrips as props (as suggested in book) but 90% were able to memorize no problem. TWO drawbacks... hence the three stars and not higher. While the dialogue in the three acts was engaging and clever, the lengthy "narrator" portions were deadly dull. We completely scrapped them for our own work. ALso, the music was much more complicated than we could manage so we just cut most of it out. Overall, I would recommend this series... and HIGLY recommend you NOT overpractice, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the format!

Very helpful book lots of great spiritual wisdom and guidance

I had for my brother who is going through a rough time in life, he is into spirituality but doesn't like to talk about it. This is a nice book because it isnt very pushy and doesn't force it's faith onto the reader. Chogyam Trungpa more talks about the human condition as a whole in a way we can all relate. Not like some other faiths that say this is good and this is bad, if you do this your good but if you do that you're bad. Which makes it easier for my brother to read and not put his defenses up.

A clear, simple, straightforward read on how to develop a "centered life" perspective and why doing so can change everything. Trungpa Rinpoche was a visionary and meditation master who came to the west in the late 50's when China was cracking down on Tibet. "Shambhala" is the name he chose to communicate the 2,500 years of Tibetan Buddhist wisdom in a secular way to the west. It refers to the legendary enlightened civilization which adhered to the notions that each person possesses an inner "Buddha" or "loving, kind center" and through meditation practices, we each can live a True life in the present moment, release fears and serve others to create an enlightened society.

A Beautiful and Peaceful Read

my friend recommended this book to me, and I found it a peaceful read. Much of the path in this book, I live in my daily life, and I don't personally adhere to any one way. I enjoy being a solitary being. However, the concepts of love and being are beautiful. The explanations of the deeper sight of living this human life are well written and understandable. I'm glad I have this book. I have no doubt, that I will read it over and over through future times in my life.

One of the most complete compilation of works about Bruno Taut in Berlin

I simply loved the book.
It`s very detailed when it comes to information, and it has a lot of photos from when the building was built and nowadays, making it possible to compare. The colorful images are also a strong point about this book. It`s one of the most complete compilation books about Bruno Taut I have read.
One thing it isn`t very nice though is that the English part is not as complete as the German part. I would strongly recommend that the reader also know German in order to read the whole book without missing any detail, although is not necessary to understand his works and context in a general way.

Nice book for an 8 year old

Love these books. My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this one is not one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.

I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.

Another great book in this fantastic series

These books are fantastic- my kids enjoy learning about great historical figures, and I enjoy reading them too! We especially like the timelines in the back of the book to put things in context. I highly recommend them as a way to encourage kids to enjoy history and a variety of other topics.

Great Resource for Hero Report

My second grade daughter did a hero report on Marie Curie for her end of the year social studies project. We did a lot of research on the web, but this was a good resource that she was able to read on her own. As she read it, she kept stopping and telling us new stuff as she read. So cute! Very valuable and I'm glad I bought it.

Although Rose (history, California State Univ., Chico; American Women and the Repeal of Prohibition) might have wished his popular history of the Cold War to work from below ground on up, his excavation of the great fear of the Fifties reveals a discourse overwhelmingly top-down. Government and civic elites propagandized for shelters built from theoretical funds that mostly were never appropriated; average citizens fretted that their neighbors were building bunkers to exclude them come Armageddon, yet apparently very few private spaces were ever erected. Rose demonstrates that the shelter was the leading if least visible icon of a civil defense debate that questioned whether nuclear wars were confinable, hence survivable, but also whether shelter was more practical or at least not incompatible with mass evacuation. Rose reconstructs Herman Kahn, the pro-limited nuclear war physicist/Dr. Strangelove model, as the most intriguing if possibly insane personage in his account but leaves much possibly fertile soil unturned. (What did history's most famous shelterists, the World War II British, think of their Yankee cousins' official mania only a few years later?) The struggle within the USA...

Fallout shelters were a major point of debate during the Cold War. Should we make them? Would they really save millions of people? Would making them suggest we could win a nuclear war with the USSR? Would preparing for war make our enemies less likely to fight a war with us? Or would it drive them to desperate measures, would it make them think we WANTED a war? Would shelters increase the CHANCES of war? These debates roared throughout the USA, within the government, in the public's mind, and within the sphere of the news agencies.
First, of course, was the cost of building enough shelters to save our populace. Nobody wanted to foot the bill.
Than the math, or should I say science, behind the shelters. Most supporters pointed out they would work in a limited nuclear exchange - after a few weeks humankind could come out of the shelters and rebuild civilization. But in a massive nuclear war, even those on the side of building the shelters, understood that their shelters would be like closing the barn doors after the horses had escaped.
Also, there was the fears of what shelters were doing to people. You have a shelter in your backyard. The bombs start to fall...and you do what? Do you lock out the rest of your friends? Do you shoot down your neighbors begging to be let in? Are people making shelters in their backyard going to become gun owning, food hoarding, heartless survivors? And what does that say about them NOW, in times of peace?
How do we train kids to handle this? What part will the school system play in this? The States?
In the end shelters were built but no where near the numbers needed to protect the people of the US. We didn't have a nuclear war, which is a good thing, and how much of that is because of our own soul-searching? Did the debate of shelters allow the public to confront our fears, explore our values, and help us define what kind of people we wanted to be? Did we want to become Mole People or stay Human? Did we want to run away from our fears, digging into the earth?
A book with amazing depth and a must for anybody interested in history, the Cold War, and human beings.

Fascinating Analysis

One Nation Underground is a fascinating analysis of the Cold War fallout shelter, the global and political milieu in which it emerged, and the pervasiveness in which the concept of protection from nuclear destruction permeated the American psyche.
I came to this book out of a recent, amusing interest in the many remaining Fallout Shelter signs still posted on public buildings in my community. Where I live, Fallout Shelter signs still appear on a derelict retail board-up in the central city, a tidy ten-unit men's rooming house, an unused police station, and numerous school buildings including my old grammar school where I learned how to "duck and cover" in the basement lunchroom.
Rose's book not only documents the American preoccupation and political developments, prompted by President Kennedy's 1961 speech, but the moral dilemmas as well. There was, after all,, a sense of doom at the prospects of thermonuclear obliteration.
The book is a serious, engrossing history that pulls from numerous sources and includes copious illustrations. It captures the fear, soul-searching, and debate during the first time in human history we faced the possibility of total destruction. This excellent book is a must read for anyone interested in American history, as well as the intellectually curious.

Digging This Book

If you're a student of Cold War culture, many of the source materials used throughout One Nation Underground will be familiar to you. That's not to imply that One Nation is boring, regurgitated, or any such adjective. Rather, Rose has crafted and extremely interesting look at how fallout shelters, for a brief period of time, was on the tip of everyones tongue, and yet despite the warnings and fears, America as a whole pretty much refused to dig in. Rose not only looks at the politics behind fallout shelters, but the historical, scientific, and cultural aspects, providing many sides both for and against civil defense, and explaining why those against won the argument and America's psyche. Rose's prose is never boring and always enlightening. A must read for any CW culture afficionado.

Good book for all ages

Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas (1901, 1902, 1908 & 2006)

This review will be covering several editions of this work, while the text is the same in all the editions their presentations vary greatly.

A well written book covering seventeen of the more popular Norse Myths from the Eddas. Mr. Mabie had a very engaging style that is palatable for adults and will still hold the interest of children.

Now, having said this, it must be remembered that this work was originally written in 1882. This was a time when children were not sheltered from the realities of life and death. A time when being politically correct meant that you voted for the winner. A time when cholera, small pox and numerous other diseases ran rampant through the population. Children were quite a bit tougher back when this work was written. So if you have a wimpy, sheltered child you may want to find another book for story time. Or try something mindless and milk toast like the Disney Channel.

All the stories are faithfully translated into a readable and entertaining format. While this work can not be considered scholarly, it does convey the spirit of the Norse Era quite well. As a testament to the books quality, few works of any type continue to be published for over a century.

One of the newer editions, "Norse Mythology, Great Stories from the Eddas", 2002, was, (to me anyway), a bit of a disappointment. While the text remained the same as the older editions, the illustrations or lack of them, however, has not. The early 1900's editions are lavishly illustrated with Nordic style gilt work on every page and simple, but powerful water color's throughout the book. The cover was graced with a depiction of a powerful Viking God, (probably Odin), looking proud and imposing. The 2002 paperback editions cover depicts a beardless, nude, neo-Greek Thor battling Jormungand, (the 1788 Henry Fuseli painting), from the Chapter 9 story, "Thor Goes Fishing". While the cover art is well done, its style would be better served on a book of Greek or Roman Myths. The interior illustrations and gilt work of the 2002 edition are nonexistent. This lack of interior illustration transforms a very good book with eye catching pages that add life to the myths into just another paperback.

All and all a nice retelling of the tales but if you can get a copy of the older editions or the 2006 paperback it's well worth it.

The early 1900's editions are lavishly illustrated with Nordic style gilt work on every page and simple, but powerful water color's throughout the book. The cover was graced with a depiction of a powerful Viking God, (probably Odin), looking proud and imposing. The 2002 paperback editions cover depicts a beardless, nude, neo-Greek Thor battling Jormungand, from Chapter 9, "Thor Goes Fishing". While the cover art is well done, its style would serve better on a book of Greek or Roman Myths. The interior illustrations and gilt work of the 2002 edition are nonexistent. This lack of interior illustration transforms a very good book with eye catching pages that add life to the myths into just another paperback.

All and all a nice retelling of the tales but if you can get a copy of the older editions it's well worth it.

NORSE STORIES by Hamilton Wright Mabie

Norse Stories, Retold from the Eddas, also known as Norse Mythology: Great Stories from the Eddas, is an 1882 book on Norse mythology by Hamilton Wright Mabie. While never explicitly stated, this book is obviously geared toward a young adult audience.

Norse Stories reads like something of a greatest hits of Norse mythology. There's so much missing: many of the mythos's best-known tales are here, but ripped from the context needed to fully understand them. What is here, though, is well done. Mabie tells the stories well, and he provides some wonderfully rich descriptions. But feels like Mabie went through the Eddas and just ripped out whole pages without making the slightest effort to link things together. He was sloppy, too; an example: here we get "Odin's eyes began to flash" six pages after he trades one for wisdom at Mimir's Well.

In its degree of violence and pessimism, Norse mythology is unmatched throughout the world. Yet Norse Stories has a distinctly positive tone, perhaps due to the book's younger audience. Whatever the reason, this book doesn't really provide the true mood or tone of Norse mythology.

Ultimately, Norse Stories is a collection of well-told stories severely hampered by their lack of context and other limitations. If you're well-versed in Norse mythology, you may enjoy what Mabie does with the stories here. If not, you aren't going to get a coherent understanding of it from Norse Stories. But it shouldn't be difficult to find half a dozen better books on the topic.

This is a fantastic book. While it is especially valuable for beginners and first year sales reps, it has value for anybody in the profession. As an experienced sales professional myself, I will say that this won't teach a seasoned sales veteran any new information about HOW to sell, but it will help to realign your thoughts with WHY they buy. Huge difference there that we sometimes become jaded to after many years in the business. We get so focused on saying things we like to say, but disregard the things that the customer needs to hear. This book will also help the seasoned veteran to get back to the positive outlook and remember why they started selling to begin with. Sales is truly the best profession in the world, nothing will give you the satisfaction like a successful selling career. I wholeheartedly believe that ANYBODY in sales, regardless of skill level or experience would benefit from reading this book.

I ordered this book on 1 April 2016. Because of work (non-sales) and other obligations, I recently finished reading the book.

I bought the original book I wanted pure advice without revisions. The book is an amazing read. I look forward to my 2nd and 3rd reviews. Do not feel like you have to rush through this book. Although the advice is given through narrative, it is first and foremost a reference book. Place it on your bookshelf next to How to Get Rich: One of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs Shares His Secrets.

THE Book on Sales!

Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:

1- "If, in your heart, you really feel the sales process is something you do t0 the prospect, then you are a manipulator. The dictionary defines manipulate: "To control the action of, by management; also, to manage artfully or fraudulently. Manipulation: Skillful or dexterous management, sometimes for purpose of fraud, state of being manipulated." I'll be the first to admit that manipulators make sales, but in my thirty-six years in the profession I have never known even one manipulator who was successful in the profession. If, in your heart, you feel the sales process is something you do for the prospect, then this book could represent a significant addition to your sales library. Your benefits will be considerable because you are truly interested in benefiting others."

2- "You've got to establish that trust and respect with your prospects if you expect to be a sales professional. This should be obvious. but for fear it's not, I'll spell it out. Again, you cannot be one kind of person and another kind of salesperson. You must be consistent in all areas of life if you are going to achieve maximum results in building your sales career. That's one of the major reasons we deal with the entire person rather than just the salesperson throughout this book. This is one of the "not-so-little" things that make the buying difference in the prospect's mind."

3- "People forget price but they'll never forget poor quality or a poor choice. They generally give the salesperson a generous portion of the blame. Some of that goes with the territory, but too much blame means you won't have the territory for long."

4- "High performers in the world of selling establish trust with customers by one-on-one, eye-to-eye communication skills. They maintain n trust by personally assuming responsibility for completing the sale, which means servicing the account on an ongoing basis and utilizing their company support people in the most effective manner. High performers demonstrated great integrity with their follow-through and belief that the sale is not complete until the product is installed and functioning satisfactorily."

5- "The critical step: in the world of selling is this step of honesty which is your total conviction, your complete belief that the product or service you sell is the best buy for the prospect."

6- "Sympathy means you feel like another person feels. Empathy means you understand how the other person feels, though you do not feel the same way...To be truly professional you must be able to comfortably move from the seller's side of the table to the buyer's side. If you know how your prospect thinks and feels, you're definitely going to sell more of what you're selling because you will communicate more effectively."

7- "One myth—that a salesperson should not get involved with customer concerns other than the purpose of the sales call—was exploded, as was the concept that price isn't important and that you should "promise them anything" to close a sale. Customers want and expect heir salespeople to be able to act as trustworthy resources who respond directly and provide them expertise, backed by effective recommendations. One significant characteristic of the high producer is his willingness to explain product drawbacks."

8- " H in the heart of your sales career is honesty, E is ego and empathy, A is your attitude toward you your prospects and profession, R is for physical, mental, and spiritual reserve, T is for tough—and the toughest thing is love"

9- "When the inner man speaks, the I not speak from the heart unless he truly believes in his product and/or service. This means that he must have paid the price by obtaining profound knowledge of his product or service. One must also believe this product/service is unquestionably what the customer/patient needs."

10- "Almost without exception, every product or service can be sold by painting word pictures, especially if the pictures are in the present tense. As I've previously stated, we think in pictures and we buy pictures if we are painted into the picture as satisfied customers."

11- "It's better to have the no today than tomorrow for the simple reason it clears your mind. You can now pursue new prospects and not count on that one for a future sale. Once you do, you fall into the trap of not prospecting for new prospects and the sale you miss today will cost you sales tomorrow."

12- "There is one specific point, however, when I throw in the towel and withdraw my efforts to close. That point is when the prospect makes it clear—after seeing the benefits—that he has no interest and cannot or will not buy. Until that point, however, I am going to make an honest effort to close the sale."

13- "I deal with and use questions in every segment of Secrets of Closing the Sale. There is no doubt in my mind that your career as a salesperson will move forward faster as a direct result of learning how to ask questions and how to use the proper voice inflection than from any other skills you might develop."

14- "To build a sales career, you need to acquire the knowledge made available through sales trainers, books, recordings, and seminars. With that knowledge you should weave in a poetic philosophy of life which says that "you can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." To the knowledge and poetic philosophy, add the common sense of the old farmer which says, "Friend, I don't care what you do, know you've got to work and work hard at seeing new prospects and servicing old customers." You have a moral obligation to work so hard at building your sales career and becoming truly professional that as my friend John Nevin from Australia says, "If anyone ever sees you coming and says, 'Here comes a salesman,' you won't let him down.'"

Very informative book on REIT stock investing. Brad Thomas is extremely knowledgeable and provides great insight on the various REIT subsectors. Worth the money for anyone interested in learning more about REIT stocks

SWEET REIT Knowledge of Quality

The early chapters stick to basics and are easily a door into this new real estate sector.
Great explanations of private versus public traded REITs and ease of selling (liquidity) or buying.
It is a reference of quality for quality listing the credit ratings for the traded REITs.
Another early chapter delves into an easy review of how to understand cash flows and the use of FFO or free cash flow or AFFO to measure value. Excellent charts and lists and references.
I am GLAD to have this one on my shelf.
The last chapters go into depth slowly for the more complicated attributes for measuring a REIT and would certainly be important for any CPA.
I followed much of it thanks to the writing quality and explanations provided....up to the very last page.
