This was honestly a great book for young adults

This was honestly a great book for young adults. It captured my attention and I couldn't put it down for hours straight. It was emotional, and had ups, downs and twists you'd never see coming. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and would like for the author to write a second part to this. It's a great read for teenagers out there, and I would recommend for everyone to buy it. I bought 8 books to gift to families and kids out there. Great work.

Absolutley Obsessed

I rarely put five stars, but this book is just that great. The last time I cried over a book was years ago and this one seriously pulled some heartstrings. This book deserves five stars so much, and I'm obsessed with it even if I haven't finished. (I'm on chapter 18).
I could say more, but I'm pretty much speechless, here. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to.

It deserves to be read

Assassin truly sucked me in with every turn of the page. I'd recommend this book to young adult readers, although it's fit for everyone over the age of twelve. Her bond with the Prince of Astodia is one I hope will never break, no matter where they are. It was emotional, hilarious, and thought-provoking.The main character, Adalia, teaches that no matter what conditions you were raised under and how pressured you can be to make a choice, your heart always knows what the right decision is. The moral is that anyone can create their own future. In the end, you will always find your way.

Credit goes to the sixteen year old author who managed to put this page-turner together.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from Adalia in book two. I hope her adventures never come to an end.

Klinkenborg's poem that celebrates prose

How to foster a certain quality of mind, the writing mind, which notices, lies at the heart of Several Short Sentences About Writing. As the quotes below show, Klinkenborg's writing advice is presented like poetry. Technically it IS poetry, as he's controlling the length of his lines. This compulsively readable declarative poem runs for149 of the book's 204 pages, the balance being examples of prose, good and bad, and concise commentary. Here are some of his gnomic stanzas that struck me as interesting:

"If you notice something, it's because it's important.
But what you notice depends on what you allow yourself to notice,
And that depends on what you feel authorized, permitted to notice
In a world where we're trained to disregard our perceptions. . . .

"Is it possible to practice noticing?
I think so.
But I also think it requires a suspension of yearning
And a pause in the desire to be pouring something out of yourself.
Noticing is about letting yourself out into the world,
Rather than siphoning the world into you
In order to transmute it into words."

. . .

"The longer the sentence, the less it's able to imply,
And writing by implication should be one of your goals.
Implication is almost nonexistent in the prose that surrounds you . . .

"Try making prose with a poetic seriousness about its tools--
Rhythm, twists of language, the capacity to show the reader
What lies beyond expression,
But with the gaits of prose and a plainness in reserve
That poetry rarely possesses, an exalted plainness."

It's up to you to decide for yourself in the crucible of your practice whether Klinkenborg's opinions are true. He calls them conclusions, not assumptions. But he urges wariness about all dogma, even his. Contrary to so many process-based writing theorists, including the influential Peter Elbow, he says the creative and critical functions are not separate. They occur simultaneously. Since I am one who polishes as I go and seemingly cannot follow vomit-it-up advice, I was heartened.

This is a classic! Very inspiring.

A gem

In this little book, Klinkenborg discusses how education and precedent lead people to write overly long, complicated sentences. He stresses writing clear sentences that say what you mean them to say. All the rest will fall into place from there.

I'm not sure if writing clearly is as simple as Klinkenborg makes it out to be but I did cull a few gems from the text that I'd like to share -

You can't revise or discard what you don't consciously recognize.

A cliche is dead matter.
It causes gangrene in the prose around it, and sooner or later, it eats your brain.

Your job as a writer is making sentences.
Your other jobs include fixing sentences, killing sentences, and arranging sentences.

This book will motivate you to focus on writing at the sentence level and not worry about the piece of writing as a whole.

May be especially useful to experienced writers

Certain books provide a solid foundation for new or aspiring writers: Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" (useful) and Susan Shaughnessy's "Walking on Alligators" (excellent) both come to mind. As we gain experience -- and perhaps fall into bad habits -- books that deliver deeper thoughts can help us put our writing on a new path. In "Several Short Sentences," Klinkenborg delivers a wealth of non-obvious perspectives that come from a place of deep thinking -- the type of thinking suggested in the book. His wisdom has helped reinvigorate my writing, and that is perhaps the highest praise I can offer.

Revising the legend of a slave woman accused of practicing witchcraft and imprisoned in Salem, Mass., in 1692, Conde freely imagines Tituba's childhood and old age, endows her with what Davis calls a contemporary social consciousness, and allows her to narrate the tale. Her pointedly political story indicts the Puritans' racism and hypocrisy and their contemporary manifestations. Conceived when an English sailor rapes an Ashanti captive on the slave ship Christ the King , Tituba grows up in Barbados but follows her beloved, John Indian, into servitude in America when he is sold to minister Samuel Parris. Charged with witchcraft when she heals Parris's wife and daughters, she shares a jail cell with Hester Prynne, who helps her plan her testimony before the Salem judges. Eventually reprieved, Tituba is bought by a Jew, himself persecuted, who frees her and gives her passage to Barbados. At once playful and searing, Conde's work critiques ostensibly white, male versions of history and literature by appropriating them.

In 1692, a Barbadian slave named Tituba was arrested for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. From this historical fact, Conde, an acclaimed writer from Guadeloupe, invents Tituba's life story from childhood to old age. As a child, Tituba sees her mother executed. She is then raised by an old woman who teaches her the African art of healing and communicating with spirits. As a young woman, she is sold to a Puritan minister who leaves Barbados for America. Tituba uses her powers for good purposes, including the healing of her master's family. But her powers are misunderstood by the narrow-minded Puritans, who can only associate witchcraft and the blackness of her skin with evil. Far more than an historical novel, Conde's book makes a powerful social statement about hypocrisy, racial injustice, and feminism through the use of postmodern irony. With a foreword by Angela Davis. Caribbean-born Cond‚ (Segu, 1987; The Children of Segu, 1989; and see below) gives questionable life to Tituba, one of the accused and subsequently released witches of Salem, in a novel of some conflicting purpose. In a lengthy afterword that includes an interview with the author, Cond‚ claims to be expressing her opinion about present-day America, where ``little has changed since the days of the Puritans''; to be writing a postmodern mock epic in which she parodies the heroic epic--and contemporary feminism; and to be giving Tituba ``a reality that was denied to her because of her color and her gender.'' But these authorial claims and results seem frequently at odds in this story of Tituba, born on the island of Barbados to a slave raped by a British seaman. When her mother is hung for striking a white man, the child is raised by a local soothsayer who teaches her to summon the dead and heal with herbs. She marries handsome but weak John Indian; and when the couple is sold to the Reverend Samuel Parris, they accompany the Parris family to Salem. There, Tituba practices her healing, tries to help young Betsy Parris, but instead, caught up in the witch-hunt, is accused of trying to harm her. In prison, she meets Hester Prynne, and to defray the cost of her keep is sold to a Jewish widower, a victim of local prejudice, who, grateful for her bringing back his beloved dead, arranges for Tituba to return to Barbados. Back in her old cabin, she is killed when her lover, trying to organize a slave revolt, is betrayed. But Tituba goes on: ``Now that I've gone over to the invisible world I continue to heal and cure. But primarily I have dedicated myself to hardening men's hearts to fight.'' The confusion of ends doesn't help a book that has too obviously sacrificed a moving and dramatic story to agenda and fashion. Tituba deserves better. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Very interesting take.

This was a great, easy read. Conde's version of Tituba sparked a lot of debate amongst my classmates. I loved the subtle admonishment of modern society.

Before reading this book understand that...

*IF YOU READ THIS BOOK AND TAKE IT WORD FOR WORD, YOU WILL NOT LIKE IT. IT IS A CLEAR EXAGGERATION MADE TO CRITICIZE CERTAIN ASPECTS OF SOCIETY*

I understand completely why some people are upset with this book because they expected it to be more factual and realistic. I get that. However, the book is a CLEAR exaggeration. She exaggerates in order to make her criticisms of society blatant. In this book, some of the criticisms that Conde tries to emphasize are:
~Christianity
~Western civilization (America, in particular)
~The stereotypical feminist
~Colonialism
~Patriarchal societies
If you are expecting this to be a historical book, you will utterly HATE it. Because yes, there are historical conflicts. Yes, there are some impossible feats. But it is a FICTION novel.

About the Author
Mike Moyer is an entrepreneur who has started a number of companies including Bananagraphics, a product development and merchandising company, Moondog, an outdoor clothing manufacturing company; Vicarious Communication, Inc, a marketing technology company for the medical industry; Cappex.com, a site that helps students find the right college; College Peas, LLC which provides publications and consulting on college admissions; and Trade Show Samurai, LLC a company that teaches trade show exhibitors how to capture lots and lots of leads.

In addition to his experience as an entrepreneur he has held a number of senior-level marketing positions with companies that sell everything from vacuum cleaners to financial data services to motor home chassis to luxury wine.

He has taught entrepreneurship at both Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. Mike is the also the author of How to Make Colleges Want You, College Peas and Trade Show Samurai . He has an MS in integrated marketing from Northwestern University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

He lives in Lake Forest, Illinois with his wife, three kids and the Lizard of Oz.

I wish I had this book 10 years ago!

I found Slicing Pie after reading an introduction about the book and realizing that the partnership dispute scenario that I just went through is unfortunately all too common. Like many, my business partner and I split equity too early during the formation of the company. Things were great until my partner abandoned the company without cause and this left us in an unfortunate battle for how to move forward. I wanted to buy him out, but he demanded a ridiculous amount of money even though the business had almost no revenue yet. This put an immense amount of stress on the business.

I read the entire book in one sitting. Everything resonated with me as I reminisced over the past 7 businesses that I've been part of over the years. Even though the most recent business is the only one where I had a serious partnership dispute, all the past partnerships could have been handled better and more fairly if we had the kind of moral and pie slicing agreements that this book discusses.

I really like the fact that the book distills the most common partnership scenarios down to basic formulas for determining everyone's slice of the pie. I see myself using Slicing Pie as the moral operating agreement for future ventures. It really covers a lot of scenarios in a much more simple way than any other business structure advice that I've heard before.

Should be mandatory reading for anyone considering doing a startup

How many companies are screwed from the beginning because of their cap table and giving away equity too easily based on optimistic hopes of the future?

If you're doing a startup, then equity is one of the most important decisions you'll make. It's the lifeblood of startups (from your own personal financial outcome if you're successful to your ability to hire employees). Equity is also a direct reflection of you as a manager. If a VC is trying to get to know you (and what kind of manager you are) after only a couple meetings to decide whether or not to invest in your company and they see how careless you were with doling out stock in your company, their mind is going to immediately jump to thinking how careless are you going to be when you have millions of their investment dollars at your disposal.

The fact of the matter is that 1 in 4 Y Combinator founders in the last batch (S2012) had a breakup. If the most successful accelerator in the world is going through founder breakups at that rate, then there's just as high (25%) of a chance of you going through a founder breakup (and most likely the odds are higher).

That is where Slicing Pie comes in. Mike lays out a framework for a dynamic equity split where stock is automatically adjusted on a sliding scale based on contributors of all the 'grunts'. You may make up your own principles or adjust some of the numbers in his proposed framework, but this is by far the best guide I've come across to systematically divide equity fairly.

Seriously, this book will pay for itself many times over if it just prevents just one squabble over equity or co-founder renegotiation. It should be mandatory reading for anyone even remotely thinking about doing a startup.

An Incredibly Useful, Entertaining, and Good Hearted book byMike Moyer

As a startup entrepreneur living in Israel, I was poking around the internet for some helpful resources in starting up a business. Primarily, I wanted to study the various model of equity distribution. As a young and idealistic entrepreneur, surrounded by the good graces of many other likeminded and talented professionals, I needed an approach to moving forward with a powerful idea that I truly believed would resonate with a core group of potential partners.

Mikes book was such a breath of fresh relief. This is a book written by an expert. Though in his humility Mike would probably refute that, nonetheless he has time tested experience in forming start up entities. Moreover, he is a sensitive man filled with integrity- at least all signs point to that in reading his book- and truly wanted to write a book that could prevent the host of tense problems that can innocuously arise in such undertakings.

I am looking forward to applying Mikes Slicing Pie methodology, and in the coming months I look forward to following up with a positive review of the teachings applied.

Errors in answer key

This book has great practice problems that go along with the hardcover book but the answer key has many errors. The publisher needs to go back and revise the answer key. Whats the point of practice problems if you can't check the answer.

About the Author
Andy Graham is an experienced thought leader in the field of data and information architecture. Andy is Head of Data Architecture for HSBC's commercial banking arm. In his spare time he writes, publishes and does a little bit of training through his own company Koios Associates.
Formerly, Andy was Head of Enterprise Data Architecture at IMS Health where he provided leadership in the area of data architecture. Prior to this Andy worked as the Regional Manager of Sybase's Northern European Business Intelligence organisation. While at Sybase, he played a key role in building the BI organisation across EMEA and was instrumental in the delivery of many successful enterprise information solutions.
Andy has also worked for Hummingbird (formally Andyne) as the UK Consultancy Manager, where he was responsible for the development of a full spectrum of professional services to complement the companies' software offerings.
Andy started his data management career at Business Objects, where he was one of the founding members of the UK organisation and as such was responsible for the success of many customer implementations and information strategies.

THE Lego Minifigure Book

As a Adult Fan of Lego, I've been waiting for a book like this for a very long time. A truly must-have for any minifig collector. I've had the book since yesterday and I literally have not put it down. The book is jam packed with 255 pages of beautiful pictures of minifigures and the short explanations for each of them. The minifig is the star of this book, and rightfully so.

It starts with a brief history of the minifigure and how they are made. Then the book quickly switches to a timeline sort of structure for the rest of the book going by decades and years. This creates a incredible journey for the reader as you witness the progression and subtle advances of the Lego Minifigure. Now, if you're looking for a checklist of every minifig ever created, this is not the book. It does however highlight almost every genre ever created. From the classic Lego Space and Castle sets in the 70's, to today's modern and popular Chima and Star Wars lines. The features some of the most common minifigs, but also does a great job spotlighting some of the most rare figures. It also does a great job in pointing out slight differences between similar looking figs.

Collecting minifigs and playing with them has always been fun. This book highlights this by being informative, funny, and very addictive. It has already helped me put back together some of the mismatched minifigs I've had for years, but it has also made me want to add more to my already sizable collection. Therein lies the only problem with this book, the hunt for more is on.

Did I mention the book comes with a Storm Trooper, a Robber, and a Towns Person?

The Ulimate Lego Figures Book You Can Buy

I was absolutely astounded when I received this book! It will be a gift for my son, and I know he will be as amazed as I was. The book is filled with pictures and information of Lego figures of all kinds and years past. It was amazing to see how the figures have evolved over the years and just to see really how many of these little Lego guys/gals there are!

Plus, the book is huge. I did not expect it to be such a large volume filled with all kinds of wonderful Lego informtion!! If you are going to buy a book on Legos, this is the one to buy. Plus, it comes with 3 minifigures as a bonus. Definitely worth the price.

Great book to explore the history of minifigure in Lego

How hard as it can be possible there was a time when Lego came without minifigures! (Yes I am that old). My first Lego box I got when we were staying in France for a month or so as my dad was finishing a training in his work expertise. We were living in Lyon during Christmas time and that's when I got a box of Lego figures - the Lego Family building figures. The year was 1974.

Then there were the hospital kit with its faceless figures and at the end of the 1970s, the minifigures got a face and new designs. I had the Snack Bar box as well as the house one which combines the older family figures with a minifigure for the baby in the house.

I lost track of the progress of Lego figures and minifigures through the years as I was in high school and university. But I still had my old Lego bricks when I got married and was looking forward to let my kids play with them when they would be old enough. Nowadays, my kids are respectively 12, 9, almost 8 and almost 6 and they love playing with my old Lego bricks as well as their own which has joined the stacks of bricks.

In this interesting book, you and your child can discover the history of the minifigures and learn some interesting facts at the same time. The table of contents is specifically set up to bring you through the years and present you the various minifigures that were part of Lego sets: Introduction on minifigures, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

What can you learn from this book? Well let me ask you some questions... Why are minifigures traditionally yellow? Do minifigures ever have noses? Which are the rarest minifigures? This book will answer these questions and many more. It is packed with numerous photos of minifigures and you will be able to read the profile of more the 2000 minifigures and other Lego characters. It contains facts, statistics, and much more. At the beginning of the book, you will be able to read about how minifigures came to life, see various concepts from the beginning years, learn more about why the size is important and what are the various parts of a minifigure, see how they are designed and made, and explore a timeline of how they became what they are today. The timeline itself is fascinating as I discovered some figures that I didn't know Lego made like the Bellville figures in 1994 or the Lego Technic figure in 1986.

The best part is that the book comes with three minifigures inserted in the cover of the book - one Lego city, one Stromtrooper, and one thief.

Every time my kids stumbled on one of these book they always check out the minifigures through time. I expect that they will dig into this book and learn quite a bit about minifigure. I wouldn't be surprise whatsoever that they will start pouring their knowledge on us adults when we have supper together. That's what happened after they read on of the other theme books from DK that was Star Wars related... *grin*

good stuff!

Super helpful for my peds clerkship and shelf exam.
It is missing a few topics I would consider high yield, but what review book isn't...
I found it as helpful, if not more helpful then the peds First Aid and blueprint books.
I liked the student consult ebook that comes with it. I could search for specific words for quicker reference.

Disappointing

The Medicine installment is great. The pediatrics version is a complete disappointment. Significant, common conditions are omitted, the author many times inserts pages of useless information while leaving out important facts. I was definitely expecting a lot more than what this book offered
