I love history and enjoyed this book
By jane v
I love history and enjoyed this book. I grew up near several famous colonial taverns in central NJ/PA, so this was of particular interest to me. I've since seen this book referenced in several other history books, which also attests to it being a well written book from the late 19th century. If you like colonial history, you should like this book.

By CPeter
This is a print-on-demand copy of the original book. The print is small, there are no pictures - the original book had many pictures - there is no index, the pages are not even numbered. If you want nothing but plain text, it is ok, but the absence of an index is a handicap to anyone doing research.

Amazon.com Review
Should you let a Fool tell you where to invest your money? If he's a Motley Fool, the answer is a resounding YES! David and Tom Gardner launched the most successful investment information service ever to grace cyberspace, and now they show you how to beat the market, even if you don't know a dividend from a divining rod. With this guide, you'll find out how the information revolution can put money in your pocket.

From Publishers Weekly
This update of the Motley Fool's first book offers the same smart-aleck advice found on the Gardners' popular Web site and in their other books: "Dear Fool, you must ask yourself: Are this company's products likely to fulfill needs in the future even better than they did in the past?... Does management have the vision?... These are extremely difficult questions to answer. But to the best of your ability, you'll want to answer 'em." Their useful tips on researching stocks, avoiding scams and tuning out the Internet din will best be appreciated by those new to the series. (Jan.)

From Library Journal
The Gardner brothers, cofounders of Fool.com, present two parts of their trilogy (third title, The Motley Fool's Rule Breakers, Rule Makers), which update original material with the latest trends in finance and investment. Throughout the briskly paced, crisp narration, their trademark focus remains on novice investors with minimal information about investments but who are ready to invest their precious capital. In Investment Guide, the Fools decipher how to evaluate individual stocks, create a diverse investment portfolio, and find high-growth stocks that will beat the market over the long run. Their explanation on how to pick that first stock, how to read various company financial reports, how to select large and small cap firms to invest in, and how to distinguish "Rule Breaker" from "Rule Maker" firms is tailored to the very patient individual investor wired to the Internet. In You Have More Than You Think, the duo focus on taking control of personal finances, the first and most important step toward successful investing and a secure future. For folks trying to balance lifestyle aspirations with financial realities, while serious about getting out of debt and into the stock market, their advice regarding financial security is solid. While very little here is radically new, with the resounding success of The Motley Fool, the Gardners' major web site, and their importance in the world of finance and investing, these hip titles are certainties for all public libraries. Could have been titled Investment for idiots if that wasn't already taken...
By Ray F
The hardest thing about this book was figuring out what was dated and what was current. Things like AOL being cutting edge with stock quotes updated every 15 minutes are obvious, but some of the other things a little less so. However, as an investment newbie, this book was great as it explains things as if they don't expect me to have any previous knowledge. Things like the dogs of the DOW, and how to read a balance sheet, etc. And everything is backed by data showing the results, and the importance of comparing to a baseline such as the S&P 500 over the same period of time.

An interesting but somewhat "fluffy" book about investing
By L. Wallach
I picked this up because I'd heard that these brothers had written a very interesting and irreverent book and website about investing and money. Basically the book is devided into three parts. The first talks about their "Dow Divident" strategy. Actually, they do give credit to others for coming up with the idea, but add some new tweaks to make it supposedly more profitable. They claim this is a very easy and safe way to invest because you are dealing with only 4 stocks which you will have to change at most once a year and which are all Dow stocks, so they are all large well-established companies that won't go broke any time soon. They claim that this technique would have netted the invester an average of 25% annual growth of the last 25 years, and 19% over the last 38 years, both well above the 10.5% that the market (S&P Index) would have given. They then go on to talk about a way to outdo even this growth by investing in small caps and in shorting stocks. So the 2nd third is about small caps and how to research them, how to read financial statements, how to understand trends, etc. The third section is on shorting stocks. Apparently if you put your money into each of these three philosophies in a certain ratio, you maximize your profits and minimize risk. However, they want you that if you don't have a lot of free time, you should just do the Dow Dividend approach as the other two can eat away a good deal of time and energy. I thought the first section of the book could have been written in about 10 pages, instead of the 100 or so that it took the Gardner brothers. Not only do they go on and on about hypothetical examples, but they also write about what they're about to write about. It's just very repetitive. Perhaps they were trying to be entertaining and trying to ease the complete novice into things, but unless you don't even know the very basics of what stocks are, you will probably get as annoyed with this part of the book as I was. The second part picks up the pace and gets into the nitty-gritty much more so in this sense it's actually useful if you want to make investing a hobby.

informative, if somewhat opinionated
By Ruth Henriquez Lyon
This was the first book I read on picking stocks, and I still refer to it occasionally. It contains some very good information on how to evaluate companies. Some of this information has since been updated on the Motley Fool website, and continues to be. That's one thing I like about their outlook: they are willing to change their approach as they continue to learn. On the downside, I find that they completely rule out some very worthwhile aspects of investing as being worthless. For instance, they have a section in the back of the book which practically compares technical analysis (chart reading) to snake oil. Although I personally would not pick a stock only on the basis of its chart, I must allow that charts help us pick good entry and exit points, and provide other pertinent information as well. One of my favorite investment authors, John Murphy, has an entire book on technical analysis. I regard him as a scholar and a very astute thinker who would never dabble in snake oil.....with resources like Murphy's books out there I can't understand TMF's cavalier dismissal of the entire field. They similarly denigrate the entire field of options and futures, which I think perhaps shows a lack of understanding on their part. Aside from these criticisms, however, I recommend this book as a very good primer on how to evaluate a company you are thinking about investing in.

Dan Graur has written a masterly account of molecular and genome evolution, and I expect to be getting more and more from it as I re-read and refer to it. As anyone who follows his blog Judge Starling (dan = judge in Hebrew, graur = starling in Roumanian) will know, he is not someone to be discreet about his opinions. His often expressed contempt for the ENCODE project, which cost around $300000 to arrive at the claim that the great majority of the human genome is “functional” makes his blog worth reading for that alone.

As well as explaining protein, nucleic acid structure, mutations and so on in the early chapters, Graur explains in some detail how phylogenetic trees are constructed from molecular data., describing, for example, the simplest method, UPGMA, as well as others such as the widely used computational method, CLUSTAL.

He is not frightened of giving the mathematical basis for his analyses, and assumes that his readers will not be, either. It would be an exaggeration to say that the mathematics is trivial or very simple, but little of it should be beyond the reach of readers who make the effort.

I was particularly interested in his calculation that if 80% of the genome is functional, as claimed, then each of us must have at least 30,000,000,000,000,000,000 children if the population is to avoid collapsing from lethal mutations. As he rightly says, this result is “bonkers”, but there is nothing wrong with the calculation, so the starting point cannot be right. He believes, as I do, that most mutations are neutral, and that the human population can easily avoid collapsing from the genetic load represented by the few that are not. I had read of this calculation in his blog, and I was anxious to check that it was in his book, as I wanted to refer to it in a book of my own.

From time to time Graur injects some sly humour into his presentation. He refers to a class of DNA that he defines Lazarus DNA as rubbish DNA that is mutated to functional DNA, saying that the name comes from “the second most famous resurrected corpse in fiction”.

The only fault worth mentioning is that Graur sometimes shows wrong structures for amino acids and nuceic acid bases: when he first defined an amino acid he said that it contains an amino (-NH2) and a carboxyl (-COOH) group, but that is impossible, because these two groups cannot coexist to any significant extent. On the facing page he has a table showing all the common amino acids in correct ionized forms, but a couple of pages later we are back to uncharged structures, as we also are later in the book. If this were a biochemistry textbook it would be a serious error, as one cannot understand the properties of biological molecules without understanding the ir structures. (A generation or two ago most biochemistry textbooks exhibited the same failure to understand ionization, but today it has largely disappeared.) However, Graur is not a biochemist, and the fault can perhaps be forgiven in a book in which the points being made do not require correct structures.

Wonderful!
By Chelsea
I bought this book as a text for my "Introduction to Poetry" class this semester. Being a poetry nerd, I expected that I would enjoy the class, but I am even more head-over-heels than I would have expected!! This book is wonderfully laid out and includes hundreds of treasured poems. I especially like the organization; rather than having the poetry in chronological order, the editor put the poems in chapters according to different aspects of poetry (i.e. tone, speaker, meter, etc.), which may put everything from Anne Bradstreet to Sylvia Plath in a single chapter.

I'm in love. I read this book on my days off, simply for the joy of reading wonderful poetry. Whether you choose to buy this as a textbook or simply to read for fun, this is an anthology you can't pass up. I hope to use this in my future teaching career.

Excellent survey of artists and forms
By A Customer
This is a nice way to settle back in with poetry if you have been away from it for a while. Hunter gives us a collection of outstanding writings from the western tradition. There is enough about form and structure to add to our appreciation of the artists' work without distracting from the meaning and emotion.
There are a few chapters at the end that are very "textbookish" but they are brief and do not invade too much on the worth of the volume as a collection for people who do not plan to write "about poetry".

Poetry from every angle: great selections, great commentary
By A Customer
When a friend gave me the Third Edition of this fine book some years ago, I couldn't have guessed how much pleasure I would get out of it. I now keep a copy in my office at work. At spare moments I pick a poem at random. I often find myself reading the poems around it, and the editor's commentary as well. Just reading the section introductions sucks you into reading all the poems in a section. This is the best collection for instilling or maintaining a love of poetry--I'm giving my doughter a copy today.

The Lords of Strategy: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World, by Walter Kiechel III

Imagine running a business without a strategy. It would be akin to driving blindfolded, to building a house without a blueprint. Yet just fifty years ago business “plans” were mere extrapolations of the status quo, heedless of the forces that determine the fate of today’s organizations: competitive threats, customer needs and business costs. The concept of strategy changed all that, paving the way for the creation of the modern corporate world.

The Lords of Strategy recounts the birth and evolution of strategy―arguably the most influential business paradigm of the past half century―and the trials and triumphs of the surprising disruptors who invented it. Principal among them were four men―Bruce Henderson, founder of the Boston Consulting Group; Bill Bain, creator of Bain & Company; Fred Gluck, longtime managing director of McKinsey & Company; and Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter―each obsessed with pinpointing how companies achieve competitive advantage over others. This insider account reveals the industry’s pioneers as “idea junkies”: a new breed of intellectuals who wielded concepts as weapons for fighting business battles. Their relentless efforts to plumb the depths of competition exploded much of the prevailing wisdom, galvanized executives into action, and forced companies to understand themselves as never before.

An important audiobook by one of management’s keenest observers, The Lords of Strategy provides listeners with a deeper understanding of the world they compete in, and a sharper eye for what works―and what doesn’t―when forging strategy.

From AudioFile
A business journalist cogently presents his ideas on how the international corporate world should carry out strategic planning. The author painstakingly researched the inside stories of the prime movers in several well-known consulting firms, such as the Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey, and others. Narrator Robertson Dean's warm baritone is well matched to the content, enhancing it and holding listener interest. Dean's use of nuance and moderate pacing works well for Kiechel's discussion of the impact and relevance of strategic planning consultants. Business students and leaders alike will benefit from this thoughtful consideration of the practice of using outsiders to help create change. W.A.G. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

A comprehensive & witty dossier
By Souvik Mitra
In the permeable world of consultants, each claiming the impact of its work or offering on the business of their clients, defining what strategy consulting really is, how it started & how it evolved, & what does the star cast look like constitutes a fascinating story, not just for its method, order & depth of research but, in my mind, in equal measure, for its slightly acerbic but always witty representation.

It was interesting for me to learn along the way how each firm looked at itself (McKinsey - the champions of C-Suite relationships, BCG - pioneers of many strategy constructs drunk on its own intellect, Bain - impact stock price over multi-year engagements & the like). The other interesting part was that this story is not just the story of consulting firms & their businesses. It is also a story of Harvard Business School & how its curricula, faculty, & the overall MBA program changed over the years on the back of Porter's contributions to strategy. Thirdly, nothing of any significant impact has been tabled supporting people as a strategic asset though right from Tom Peters & many others like him have never really had any dearth of constructs (The S Curve, for example) that center on people as a strategic asset. Along the way, came the stark definition of strategy parred down to "means of creating shareholder value" culminating in PE firms - the ultra-rational business - that became big recruiters of strategy firms. The breakdown of the value chain model of a business tying suppliers, financiers, businesses & consumers started to wobble with the coming of the internet & the ensuing search for a new model to led rather esoteric "network models" that nobody could implement.

The twenty first century story of strategy, as you'd imagine given the collapse of the financial system, is not the most redeeming. And while a bulk of blame might reside within both the actual financial services companies & the lax regulatory environment, Kiechel points out that these Financial Services companies were all great recruiters of strategy consulting firms, albeit by the time of the crisis, these firms were no longer in the C-suite as much as they used to be earlier. Having said that "strategy as risk management", many concede, was a concept that never really took off. The final chapter is really a lot of very interesting speculation on the future of strategy & how to build strategy in the DNA of organizations, how strategy needs to be "adaptive" & the kind of organization that'll thrive is a learning & a democratic one where strategic insights are fostered from just about anywhere & these are then assimilated into the organization's functions.

All in all, this is a story of remarkably gifted people, high on analytical ability, aggressive & champions of devising constructs that had a tremendous impact on many businesses & lifted the business school from the lower rungs of the academic ladder to one of the top ones.If nothing else, this one fact remains indisputable.

There's a select audience for this business book, but anyone who has a interest in the history of business strategy will find this book very interesting. The reason for 4 stars versus 5 is that I am racking my brain to find a lot of useful and applicable information in the book to help me become better at building a strategy. In my MBA class I was looking for some pearls of wisdom from the book but some of the best tips are the books that are referenced in this one. In summary, if you are very interested in the history of the strategy business, you will love this book.

Excellent book. Highly recommended.
By Matti Makelin
This book has been four years in my bookshelf but earlier I only had read the preface. The book puts the well-known methods of strategy in historic context and describes how they have been developed as well as the people behind them. It also describes the stories of some big consultancy firms. There are many other summaries, but here are lots of anecdotes and even humour, the book is fun.
I'm not going to describe the content by rewriting, just some of the impressions and conclusions I got from it.
The author says not much has happened since the 1990s. Strategy has lost at least some of its relevance and attraction.
The book reaffirms my long-time perception (as a consultant) that strategy as we have learnt to know it is a tired discipline. It lives the era of Brezhnevian stagnation. Not all, maybe half of it is obsolete even toxic, waste of money and time, like in advertising, but which half? On the other hand, huge and fast value migrations prove that there is a need for something new that timeshifts and teleports the ideas of the 1970s to the reality of the 2010s.
But unlike the author, I think much has happened in the last twenty or so years, there is a tacit "new strategy" but still as a patchwork of fragmented ideas, nobody has yet written a big synthesis, like Michael Porter wrote on "classic strategy" a generation ago. "New strategy" is still pieces of rock in need of sculptor and glue.
Concepts and pragmatic tools - one-pagers such as the growth-share matrix, the five forces framework and the value chain aka business system - have been formative to strategy and legitimated it. In the 1960s, the big issues to be solved were portfolio and positioning, due to deregulation, antitrust legislation and growth. In the 1980s and 1990s the issues were process management and execution. I guess today the big issue is digital transformation. The author searches for a new strategy of the 2000s in four dimensions, risk management (in the aftermath of the 2007 financial crisis), networking and boundaries, purpose, and people.
My other perception is how shaky the foundations of "classic strategy" are. The chair needs more legs. Maybe, in addition to economics, "new strategy" must look more at technology together with system and complexity theories.
A common explanation of the diminishing relevance is the increased dynamics. There is very little about dynamics in "classic strategy". I guess this should be seen as a methodological challenge and as an increased need instead of lost relevance. Something "new" is needed, more practical than "disruption", and it must handle dynamics and technology with entrepreneurial people.
The only critique is that - probably due to the journalistic background of the author - in some places the writing style is long, curly and unstructured. For a non-English and maybe not so intellectual reader like me some words are too rare. This is like fine dining and slow food when I expect fast food that comes from a clear menu. But now I also understand why some articles in Harvard Business Review have been similar, as the author writes, they have been ghostwritten by journalists.
